All the areas you mention in bold are, well, mostly boring suburbs.

Why do I think you haven't explored Houston? For one, you couldn't name properly the areas the light rail went.... just sounds like you don't know your stuff. And if you don't know the light rail route, that sounds like you've never been to the museum district, the theatre district, the CBD, and lots of other areas of interest.

You must be very young. The light rail hasn't been there very many years. Yes, I've been to the Museum District (and even inside the museums!), Hermann Park, Rice, U of H, etc. ad infinitum, BEFORE the light rail was built. I've been all over this city, even the East side (have you?). Actually, I go downtown every week to go to the Greensheet.

No, I've never been on the "rail". What's the point? Drive downtown, find someplace to park, so I can ride what's basically a tram? And yes, my mistake for mentioning the Galleria. When the light rail was first proposed, it was going to begin at the Galleria. In my haste, I included it in the route.

Here's some pictures for you:
North American Light Rail Information and News Site A map of the route.

RTA | The Regional Transportation Authority: Public transportation in Northeastern Illinois Link to the RTA, which covers Chicago & Suburbs (real suburbs, out beyond 40 miles away, even into Wisconsin & Indiana). Click on the maps link, to see what kind of bus, elevated & train coverage is there. Which was the point of my commenting that I miss being in the land of public transporation.

Now that that's covered, I have to ask - at the risk of getting booted for being argumentative - why are YOU here? I'm here because I'm from the Chicago suburbs & like knowing what's going on there, & I love the pix posted here. Are you from the area? Ever live there? Or, just trolling forums for imagined slights to your hometown (even though you have posted you're in Fort Bend County)? The only possibly negative thing I've said about Houston is the lack of a good pub/trans system. And yet, you keep coming at me. So, what's your deal?

Ive lived in Chicagoland nearly all my life and now im in my mid fifties, im ready for a change. Looking forward to not getting cabin fever for 7 months straight in the winter, dealing with construction on the roadways, driving on some of the worse roads in the nation, dealing with alot of unpleasant people daily, paying silly high property taxes , et al... Im moving to the FLorida Panhandle to semi retire next year --- it doesnt have any of the above problems . I have found Chicagoland to be VERY good for making a living though .

7 months? Cmon. Its the last day of November and we just got our first accumulative snow (a piddly 1.5"). Other places have gotten several feet already. So that leaves us with December, January, February and March. Expect a flurry or two in April, a laughable "snowfall" in May (which melts within an hour or two)... I count 4 months of snowfall in Chicago that can actually accumulate, but other months like November, April and May are hardly cold or snowy enough to cause Cabin Fever. Are you prepared to deal with the extreme heat and humidity, hurricanes, tornadoes, bugs, venomous snakes, etc, and all the other problems that FL's panhandle has? No place is perfect.

1. People stay inside for a good 6-7 months typically starting early October. It isnt based on snow strictly -- it based on the cold. Dont tell me people in your neighborhood go for walks in the cold (??) ; nowhere have i seen people stroll around the block when it gets below 50 f. in Lake County.

2. The Florida Panhandle is the coolest part of the State , and yes...im willing to suffer Cabin Fever for some 3 months of brutal hot and humid temps , in fact, i find it invigorating to sweat. Hurricanes in the Panhandle are extremely rare ; Hurricane Ivan was the last major one and it only did local Pensacola damage for the most part . Before that, you have to go back to the 1960's . Tornadoes are infrequent and i dont care about snakes, bugs, flying cockroaches, or eating grits, etc...so long as I can leave the rat-race , stress, and problems of ChicagoLand. Ill think of you when i go to the beach 3 times per week in the winter.

It's not that cold unless there is wind.

Hardly anyone does but im glad you get out for a walk in 30 f. temps. How would you like to go for a walk on a pure white sand Beach in a T-shirt whenever you want , when its 60-70 f. outside in the ALL of the winter months in a place that sees almost 300 sunshine days per year.? Theres much better places to live than the Midwest and im sure theres worse, too. Theres good reasons why people move from the Midwest to the Gulf southern States ...especially for retirement.
