I pretty much have a "no relocate zone" redlined around the entire deep south and Bible belt. Exceptions would be places like Savanah, GA and Austin, TX.

I am from Ohio originally and would gladly move back instead of living in Chicago.

The only place worse than Chicago would be the whole state of New Jersey

This area is great but DW is hating it more every year. The winter is too cold and lasts too long, the cost of living is high and the b*#lls*&t of Illinois and Cook County government is ticking me off more and more. Why do the indictments of our governers always have to happen AFTER they leave office?! And I agree with her on those points. She loves all the other opportunities, and things this great area offers. Hopefully I can hold her off 10 more years, retire and do winters someplace warmer. I have deep roots, employment, family and Cubssox games in this great Midwestern Mecca!

All opinions. I'm from Texas, and while I would never move back permanently, there are nice areas of Texas such as Corpus Christi/Padre Island, Austin, and a few other cities. Texas can seem like a **** hole though, especially those used to living in Illinois.

I am from Kentucky as well. A beautiful state, beautiful scenery. I moved to Illinois when I was fourteen. I guess it is so different in Illinois from everywhere else I have lived that I can't bring myself to like or appreciate it here. I don't appreciate the 'racial diversity' (though Corpus Christi, my home town, is 55% Hispanic and I love it there), I don't appreciate the congestion, I especially don't appreciate the high taxes, and I REALLY don't appreciate how speculators have jacked up home prices to unreasonably high levels, making someone with a decent income like me and my girlfriend not able to afford a home unless we pay out 40% of our income. I'm glad that the housing market is forcing home owners to go back to reality. But that is another topic altogether.

The Chicago land area has its pro's, but like the OP, we just can't seem to really enjoy life here.

(^)

Try the far west burbs. Theyre cheaper (for the most part), everything is new, its quieter than being in so close (especially Romeoville). You also have direct access to places like St. Charles, Geneva, etc, that are lovely towns. Just a thought....

St. Charles and Geneva ARE lovely towns. However, not permanent areas of residence for someone like me. Chicago land gets bigger every year. Romeoville used to be very small back in 2000. Now the area is crawling with cars.

If I had to live anywhere in Illinois, it would be out in the west, or maybe near the Mokena area. However, I am looking into moving back to Kentucky as soon as I get my teaching certificate and a job interview.

I just wish the citizens of this state wouldn't put up with the bull**** that Cook County and Chicago forces on the rest of the state. That alone sickens me enough to move away from here.

Well, what about Virgil, IL? Only 10 minutes to St. Charles, but COMPLETELY isolated, its kinda strange, but very quiet.

Anyways, regarding Crook County? Thats why I dont live there in the first place.
