Schools such as Clements and Cinco Ranch were ranked higher than their New Trier/Hinsdale counterparts. That is what I was referring to. And Houston area charter schools are superior to Chicago area charter schools. You greatly underestimate Houston area schools. Even Houston ISD had Bellaire High, which ranked higher than both Hinsdale Central and New Trier.

CRB, not be argumentative, but how do you validate your data? Looking for an "education" here, please.

I think NT gets a lot of press because of the snootiness of the northshore and that people can trace it to a few John Hughes movies back in the 80's.
As for stickers, I see similar stickers all over the area. Out in Aurora, I see the West High school sticker on countless cars featuring a big "W" or their racist Indian head symbol. Sorry if that comment offends anyone, but I really don't like those symbols.

Didn't most of the John Hughes films refer to Shermer HS, aka Glenbrook North? I loved it in Dogma when Jay referred to Shermer - n- Illinoise?
New Trier is a great school system, especially since the parents are all very well to do and pay lots of taxes to keep it that way.
No disrespect.

All I can find online is the top 100 schools. Neither Texas or Illinois have any schools on this list. I certainly don't expect you all to say "Okay, I believe you" just because I read the article and remember. But the Bel Air high school you refer to is not the right one. That Bel Air high school is located in El Paso. I am sure Clements is below Hinsdale Central and New Trier however I bet Bellaire (the Houston school) is higher. With that said I'd certainly send my daughter to any of those schools. My response really was more to the person that said Houston gives you a third world education. This is not the case at all.

I think it puts three of the CPS magnet schools in there along with Stevenson. There are there or four from Dallas area too.

Ok let's see if some perspective can help.
Is New Trier an excellent HS? Most certainly.
Using "Newsweek" and other numerical data, is it the best in the nation? No
Do many parents feel that their kids receive a top-notch education, preparing them well for college? Yes
Are there other IL High Schools that do this? Certainly, quite a few actually.
Are there other IL High Schools that would top New Trier using "Newsweek" and other numerical data? Yes, Stevenson comes to mind.
Does this make them all around better High Schools? This is where the numerical data and the quality of the prerequisites come into argument. Some feel Newsweek places too much emphasis on AP and test scores. There is definitely a subjective element. We as parents need to use due diligence and not rely on a weekly news magazine completely to determine if our kids go to a good school or the right school for them.
Are there excellent High Schools in other states? Yes, of course, including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and many other Texas towns.
So I find this argument quite silly from both sides. Those who argue that New Trier is average, over-rated or mediocre are WRONG. Those who say New Trier is the best, or "statistically" a Top 100 in the nation are also WRONG.
The parents who have a good experience, have well educated kids who go on to lead productive lives, proudly display the NT stickers and therfore feel that New Trier is the best high school-period-are CORRECT!!

Here's an exerpt from the Newsweek article:
This year, a group of 38 school superintendents from five states wrote to say they did not want their schools included. "We all believe that all schools, communities-and your readers-are poorly served by NEWSWEEK's persistent efforts to use a single statistic, the number of students who sit for AP or IB exams, to rank schools," their letter said. "In reality, it is impossible to know which high schools are 'the best' in the nation. Determining whether different schools do or don't offer a high quality of education requires a look at many different measures, including students' overall academic accomplishments and their subsequent performance in college, and taking into consideration the unique needs of their communities."
I called John Chambers, superintendent of the Byram Hills district in New York and a leader of the letter-writing group. He agreed that the data we sought was public information, and that he and other superintendents would provide it if we insisted. I told him we believe that we serve not superintendents, but readers, and they wanted to see the list. Chambers said OK, but could we let readers know about the attempted boycott? I said I thought that was a great idea.
Here are the districts whose superintendents endorsed the letter:
New York: Ardsley, Bedford, Blind Brook-Rye, Brewster, Bronxville, Byram Hills, Chappaqua, Dobbs Ferry, Greenburgh/North Castle, Hewlett-Woodmere, Katonah-Lewisboro, Mamaroneck, Mt. Pleasant-Cottage School, North Shore, Ossining, Rye Neck, Scarsdale, Spackenkill, Tuckahoe, Valhalla.
New Jersey: Montclair, Montgomery, Tenafly, Verona.
Connecticut arien, Simsbury, Stonington, Wilton.
Illinois ecatur #61, Deerfield/Highland Park #113, Evanston, Glenbrook #225, Lincoln-Way #210, New Trier #203, Oak Park and River Forest.
Massachusetts: Amherst-Pelham, Masconomet, Wayland.
I think the rankings for the IL schools must be for the previous year, since they asked not to be included in the rankings?
