Hammond has declined considerably since the mid 20th century, but it's still a much nicer place to live than Gary or Calumet City. Part of that has to do with the slower rate of white flight, which often devastates affected communities (Hammond is still majority white by a long shot, but has a somewhat diverse population).
The Hammond side of my family is quite large. When my Grandpa turned 80 several years ago, we rented a tour bus to go around Hammond and talk about the time/place that he and my Grandmother grew up in. It was a little be depressing for them to see what has happned to places in Hammond from their youth, since their old neighborhood is on the "bad side of town" (they and my mother left decades ago). However, it was really funny to see the looks on people's faces as a giant tour bus stopped in front of their houses. They must have thought that someone famous grew up there. |

Its not about the scenery; it is about the story itself.

I live in Kenosha and consider it to be "Chicagoland". Many people up here hate that fact, but the truth is there are many families that have moved here from IL. We also receive Chicago tv stations here in addition to Milwaukee's.

Teachers at my school live in Wisconsin and commute every day to the high school.
