People will argue that "that's Indiana not Chicago" when you tell them you lived in the Chicago area. They wouldn't say that for Naperville, Waukegan, Skokie, Oak Lawn e.t.c.

Unlike many State lines which run down rivers or mountains, here it's only an invisible line down State Line Road. Commuter rail service only confirms its link. Many Northern Indiana residents commute to Chicago, just as many construction workers from Illinois commute to Whiting or East Chicago when big projects are being done. And many IL residents cross the line to try their luck at the casinos, or buy fireworks.

Perhaps my statement needs a bit clarification meaning that off course those IL suburbs wouldn't be called IN suburbs but they would be way more commonly identified with Chicago and Chicagoland vs any IN suburb.

This site identifies NWI as part of the metro area and has good visitors info:

Well look case in point from a recent thread on this section of the forum: Chicago's suburban sectors

That is a thread that talks about and identifies Chicago's suburban sectors but NW Indiana is completely overlooked! That's what I am talking about. For some, its there but its not!

I voted yes in this survey but forgot to list NW Indiana in the other thread.

I'm from "da Region;" we are a small area of the state that receives most of its news from Chicago television stations, we're on Chicago time, and there's a commuter train that takes people into Chicago for both work and pleasure many times a day. Plus, I can see Chicago from the beach just three miles from my house.

When traveling, it's very easy to say you're from the Chicago area, as most people know where that is. If you say you're from the Gary area, you'll be met with, "Oh, wow, you have to suffer through those awful Chicago winters."

I will say though, with cable and internet access, getting your television from a certain place is no longer much of an indicator. We stumbled on Chicago's WGN while visiting Newfoundland!
