There are some neighborhoods on the far North side of the town and near Maine South that are not very walkable, but I would say that the majority of the town enjoys a pedestrian friendly lifestyle.
I would even walk home from Maine South and I live right by Uptown. That's about a mile to a mile and a half.

Park Ridge also has a Downtown on Devon/Talcott and even on Canfield there are restaurants and a short walk Uptown. It's nice that depending on where you live you could be near Niles or Edison Park.

You will never be too far away from anything because Park Ridge is 7.1 square miles and it has a central Uptown.

Just looked at this thread. All the families I have known from Rogers Park, who want to move end up in Evanston. It is an easy transition and Rogers Park and Evanston offers similar levels of diversity, but Evanston doesn't have the negatives that Rogers Park does. What is funny is that many Evanstonians complain about Rogers Park residents who come up north and use the beaches and parks, oh and also SCHOOLS, they sneak in. I think Evanston and the Evanston/Skokie school district would work well for you. I would also look at Skokie.
