It is impossible to have a poll of only 7 out of the TONS of chicago suburbs up for 'best downtown', especially with the all western suburbs (besides Evanston) bias.

That being said, I like Elmhurst, La Grange, and Evanston as well as the small downtowns of Libertyville and Lake Forest. I'll throw Wilmette in there as well.

Naperville, then Geneva, then Hinsdale on that list.

Evanston seems to have a very cookie-cutter downtown these days. I would say Central Street or Main-Chicago are nicer more charming areas. They have more upscale boutique shops. I had to vote for Naperville as best downtown. It's just so huge and has a nice mix of shops and things to do. Lake Forest is very pretty, but there are not really that many things that would pull you there versus your local downtown or shopping mall. Winnetka has fairly nice shopping districts with several specialty stores and a great restaurant (Jerry's @ Corner Cooks). I think the Glen is a very nice shopping district, though not Downtown Glenview or Downtown Northbrook.
