Relocation Help - Naperville, IL
Hi All,
I have been reading your posts about Naperville and surrounding areas and am very overwhelmed with all the information. My husband has recently received word that he will be taking up employment in Naperville, IL. We are from Texas so have no clue what to expect.
After reading the posts and doing some research, I found Naperville VERY expensive to live in whether it be apartments, housing or rentals. So my question is, can any help me with information on surrounding areas that are safe but affordable ? or more information on Naperville and what to look for ? (Tips)
PS. I was either stay in HOT HOT HOT "brown" texas or move to something pretty and green :-)
Thanks in advance.

Yes, Naperville can be expensive, but its a really great city to live in (CNN's Top 5 places to live in the USA). The question is, how much can you afford on rent? Or how much do you want to spend on a house? All the places around Naperville are perfectly safe. A cheaper alternative would be Warrenville, right to the north of Naperville.
Here you can find many pics of Naperville:

And are you ready for the winters here? Theyre a lot colder and longer than in TX, but the spring/summer/fall here are far better, IMO.

There are parts of Aurora that fall in Naperville's school district which might be a good option if you have kids, since Aurora is generally cheaper than Naperville (it does have some sketchy areas, but the parts in Naperville schools are safe) and Naperville has great schools. Also, Plainfield would be worth checking out as a safe and cheaper option near Naperville.

If you husband is working on Naperville you might find Oswego/Yorkville areas to be cheaper and not that far of a drive. I know lots of people who are transferred to Naperville and live in these areas. Just an alternative to Naperville.

Depending what part of Naperville, Plainfield may be a good option. Good school districts there and close to Naperville.

Don't forget Downers Grove. Downers Grove has great schools and neighborhoods that are much more affordable. Also, consider sections of Westmont that are in the Downers Grove or Hinsdale/Darien school districts. Hinsdale South is truly one of the most underrated schools in the Chicago area as people tend to foolishly try to compare it to Hinsdale Central. I've never been too impressed with Westmont High School.

there are a lot of things to choose from within a 20 to 30 minute drive from naperville. I would suggest checking a map and looking into a lot of the towns. That is how we ended up in sugar grove..22 years ago!! Since my husband works just off I88 in Naperville, we started looking at communities outside that are by how long the drive would be and housing prices/schools etc. we love sugar grove and are glad we looked "west"!!!

Naperville has a variety of options, but you get much more for your money in Texas. You may want to consider Plainfield (north), parts of Bolingbrook, Batavia and south Glen Ellyn

Agreed about Batavia. Depending on where you need to get to in Naperville though, traffic can be quite a hassle.

Buy or rent in a good school district. Your children are more important than a house.
