Thornton had such great sport traditions. I remember going to a friend's game and seeing the boosters (many over 70 years of age) in the stands proudly cheering on their Wildcats.

I may have overlooked it and sorry if I did... But no mention of Dixie Square Mall? WOW. The mall that was supposed to be the mall of the future which wound up becoming a relic still standing much as it has for the past 30 years... In complete disarray, but the 1960s design is still prevelant and noticeable.

And my family owned the two restaurants I mentioned. We stuck it out when the blacks were just breaking our windows and stuff like that, but when they started attacking the women in my family it was time to leave.
Running away doesn't solve anything either for you or for Harvey. You should have welcomed the working class blacks and made them allies in the fight against the riff raff that would follow. If you make the riff raff uncomfortable, they will go elsewhere. That has been my experience here in suburban Atlanta. My neighbours are black and we have Mexicans too but we don't have trouble because if we even smell it we deal with it. We call the cops and we have arms and we let that be known. Nobody hangs out on the streets of Smyrna Georgia because if we see them the next call is to 9-1-1 and the cops will come and tell them to move on- or check them for warrants and dope. Word gets around. The blacks next door have as much a stake in the hood as we do. Their property is at stake too. And they know it.

Default Phoenix & Harvey

These Threads bring back a lot of memories. I grew up in Phoenix on 155 st between Halsted & Vincennes,Went to St. John's & Thornton. I graduated in 59. My wife grew up in Harvey & graduated in 62.She lived on the corner of 155th & Paulina right across from Inglas Hospital. We got married in 63, bought our 1st house in Markam in Canterberry Gardens, then back to Harvey. Our house was on 163rd, 3rd house east of Lathrop. From there we moved to Orland Park, and then from there to Rhinelander, WI. in 79, Just got tired of the rat race. Came up here since I was a kid, and always loved it here. It was a hard on the kids,Son 2nd yr. H.S. and daughter in 6th grade, but after a while they got used to it, and are still here and married with ther own family. Mom & Dad moved up a year later after retiring, both have passed away now. Got carried away, back to some memories. Does anyone remember the sugar bowl across from the bus company, or the Cold Spot drive in. A lot of drag racing back in thoes days. Almost every Sunday it was RT. 30 drag strip. How about Frank's pool hall on Halsted St. that was a hang out when I was in H.S. I remember when we were kids walking down to the drug store from collidge school to get an ice cream cone. My cosin lived in Dixmore, we played ball at scouts field. Glen Dressen, Tom's brother took our wedding pictures. Anyone remember George Brown,s lounge on Halsted, my cosin owned that. At St. Johns, Does anyone remember Father Henery & father Jack, Father John was there when my mother went to St. Johns. I,m sorry about getting carried away, but if I think I could go on and on. When I was kid growing up, I never taught black or white, we were friends, color did'nt make any difference. Would'nt it be wonderful if we could get rid of all the hate in this world.

Default harvey, illinois

born & raised in harvey, ill ingalls memorial hospital 1945. dad owned people's coal & oil in harvey; he was everyone's friend. died in 1958 and had to have the wake for 3 days because of all the people who wanted to pay their respects to him. memories - pabst blue ribbon bar & beef sandwiches - oh man, they were the best, Illinois Central, the first diesel engine going past the apartment where i lived, ascension grade school and the nuns with those danged pointers and rulers, the bonath twins ballet school, the parades on the 4th of july down 154th street, the eagle store. GOD THOSE WERE THE DAYS. what a shame to see harvey destroyed. it truly was a beautiful town once upon a time. oh i remember when the edsel showroom blew up and the fire department supposedly warned not to help put it out, morrison's furniture and all kinds of fun stuff.
