Must be scary to know that even having a lot of money does not mean you are 100% safe from crime.

Having alot of money usually means you have what others want. I never met a soul that thought themselves 100% safe from crime.

Aren't most home invasion robberies targeted attacks, usu vs small business owners....who are often engaged in businesses in which disputes are settled "out of court"?
Would guess most high-end professional criminals prefer to burglarize homes for jewelry/art while homeowners are away at their wkend houses....and homeowners later simply call Chubb to compensate for the well-insured property...any well-run insurer prices its policies to reflect the rather low crime risks that most affluent face...
Isn't BH area known more for small-business-derived money than are Eastern LF/Winnetka...or Chicago's GoldCoast?

Sometime in the mid 1990's, (1996?), a Barrington Hills couple was shot to death and their home set on fire by a man who had worked on their house. His motive was an fake Monet they owned. He finally went to trial this year.
BH is an easier target than Winnetka/Lake Forest, fewer neighbors, people tend to mind their own business, sheriffs spread among 4 counties, police have a larger area to patrol.
HSW - very interesting analysis of motives, you may have hit on something.

Here's a comparison of the crime index calculated by City-data:
National Average- 323.2
Barrington Hills -55.7
Evanston-284.9
Wilmette-69.1
Winnetka-46.4
Kenilworth-40.1
Glencoe 55.6
Highlnd Park-101.1
Lake Forest-35.7
Many top corporate executives call the Hills home. There are also a significant number of sport players in the Hills.
Local papers say intruders entered the home through an open basement window. You don't drive around the mostly private roads in the Hills, in the middle of the night, looking for an open window. This suggests that at least one of the intruders knew the window was open.

Those rich people should be able to afford the sweetest home security systems, a couple of Rottweilers and some fully automatic guns, what gives?

^^A false sense of security.
I grew up in a very safe place, but I'd never leave a door or window unlocked - that seems silly to me.

Thats there to be sure, but there is a serene and comfortable feel of peace and security living hidden in the oaks and long drives among many. It was indeed a wake up call for alot of us. And as hard as this is to understand, not eveyone is rich here.
