I walk home alone in my neighborhood at night and just in the past year I have been feeling uneasy about it, and now I never do it. I live in the so called "apartment cluster," and I think people are crazy if they think the cost of living is low because I pay $925 a month and I am a single mother!! No sec.8 for me! I dont even know where to begin..I read almost all 19 pages of the past post on Elmwood park and all I wanted to do was hunt ndfmnlf down and smack the s#i# out of him..what an ignorant, stupid, negative angry, small, little man..How dare you talk so un-kindly about everyone who actually lives in EP...I mean really who spends there time scanning posts to only quote areas you dont like and argue about it??? Doesn't it strike you odd that 40 people were against you? Do you still actually think that you were right? I mean come on!!!!!!!!!! ok..I feel better!! I am moving out of state in January 09 and I am glad...Elmwood Park is so very close to the infamous west side and it is becoming more and more like it everyday. I dont feel safe with my small son. I can almost guarantee that when I come back to visit in a few years this will no longer be a desirable place to live...and whoever thinks that the comments being made are racist needs to learn the difference between facts and racism....PERIOD.
and PS- the previous poster is right..The people in question in regards to Elmwood Park and other "ghettos" of the city want to cry when people have something negative to say, but for the most part they happily dwell and wallow in their own stereotypes.

Elmwood Park is no ghetto- it is going through some of the same changes that much of this country is experiencing. Lovinlife- you can run but you cant hide. Let me know where this safe paradise is located where you are moving- then we can start a post on it. The post can be titled- Maybe The Grass Really is not Greener on the Other Side.

Grass is not always greener on the other side
I actually agree with Potter on this one. I hope your move takes you to a more positive place. Grass is always greener on the other side. I was bored in Itasca and moved into the city, to Humboldt Park. Guess what it is not boring, but there are all kinds of other problems like gangs and all the problems they create as well as people who are born with an entitlement mentality.
$925 is relatively cheap for rent. I rent a 3 bedroom apartment in Humboldt Park for that price and I am almost as far west as Pulaski. There are places in Humboldt Park that rent for well over $1200 that are not condo quality.
$925 per month rent will allow plenty of Section 8 people to move in to your area, which is what appears to be happening. My guess is you would be hard-pressed to find $925/mth apartment in River Forest, except for maybe a few apartment buildings that border Elmwood Park or Forest Park.
For comparison, my place in Itasca rents for $1500/mth. At that price level you don't get riff raff. At $925, you are susceptible to riff raff. Whether or not you are riff raff, there are people at your income level who are.

If being a jerk is a man defending his town when someone refers to it as a ghetto- then I guess Im a jerk. You obviously do not really know what a ghetto is. Look at Elmwood Parks crime stats, income stats, average price of their homes. You are so uneducated- being a bartender is the best place for you- because you may never see better. Once again a bartender- who rents in the most undesirable part of town- is making judgements on an entire town. Go check out the beautiful Georgians, English Tudors, Ranches, and all Brick Colonials between North Avenue and Dickens, from 79th-74th. There is a reason why they call this section River Forest Manor. Maybe in your new town you should try section 8- sounds like you might be eligible.

Agreed, espcially if you only have $925/month to spend on rent. That actually is very low unless you're in a marginal area or in a very small place. I too am curious about where she's going. Don't want to see lovinlife turn into hatinlife so I hope she chooses carefully.

I agree with you on the ''ghetto'' part. Their are some people on here that don't know what ghetto is. The crime rate in Elmwood Park is way below average. I would go as far as saying there are no ghettos in North/Northwestern suburban Cook County. If some people want to see ghetto/run down suburbs, go to Maywood or Cicero in the near West Suburbs, or visit some of the south suburbs like parts of Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, or Harvey(where I'm from).

If you would have read my post correctly I said other ghettos...I didn't mean to include Elmwood Park..I grew up in the Detroit metro area and know very well of ghettos..I don't think Elmwood park is even remotely close to being a ghetto...My only point was that since I moved here 2 years ago it has changed a lot...and being the victim of personal property crime myself and knowing a few policemen that work in EP I know that they are experiencing more crime now than they were in 2005. For your information I have an associates degree in Administrative Medical Assistance, and am 12 credit hours away from a Bachelors majoring in Sociology. I have chosen to bartend while I am finishing school because the money is excellent. You are a negative man Potter..I wish you the best in EP...I am moving to La Jolla in California because I can afford it. I live in a 1 bedroom in EP for $925 and it is average price for the area..I desire more so I am leaving.....You stay here and enjoy! Take Care!

$925 gets you section 8 people and riff raff in Chicago? How do you people still live there? How does anyone afford to live in Chicago? Granted, it's been a few years since I lived in Chicago.
