Hello,

We are relocating to Libertyville IL and we have 2 young children. I was thinking about living in Northbrook but I see that Arlington Heights seems to be a nice town as well. Which town would be best to live in according to you? Thanks for your advice!

Recently relocated from Milwaukee WI to AH. We are pretty happy with the town amenities and people. It is a nice mix of familes, older people and some singles in the downtown area. Neighborhoods are established with a lot of quality older home inventory as well as the teardown McMansion variety.

Some of it new stuff looks out of place in my opinion. For example you will see 5000 sq ft monstrosities sitting amongst 1400 sq ft 1950's ranches. But to each their own I guess.

I do believe going north of Libertyville would get you more for your money. We thought AH was expensive for housing stock but because I work in Mt. Prospect, the location was ideal for us. I ride a bike to work - that is nice.

Commuting times can be long around here so be careful how far from work you live.

Good luck

I feel that AH is more economically and socially diverse. Both are good choices. I like AH downtown and library. Northbrook could state that, statistically, Glenbrook HS's are better than all but, perhaps Prospect HS. Northbrook has better hockey and figure skating programs although both towns have strong Park Districts. Arlington Heights allows you to afford more house for your $. Truly a win/win choice. Spend some time around both downtowns and strike up converstions with people and you will learn a lot.

Northbrook hands down. Better education and lifestyle if you can afford it.

the PERCEPTION of "keeping up with the Jonses", snobbiness and High School hazing rituals. PERCEPTION Arlington Heights is more "down to earth".
I have known really nice people in Northbrook; also know via involvement in skating program that there is conspicous consupmtion happening that I don't want my kids exposed to.

The train line (UPNW) through Arlington Heights is three-tracked (as opposed to two on the MD-N line through Northbrook). That means more and faster express trains.
