Default Moving from Richmond VA - Looking for car tax info

Hi All,

I am moving from Richmond, VA to Naperville, IL. I had bought a new Toyota Camry 2007 model 2 years back. Its still financed and I pay monthly payments.
My question is if I register my car in Naperville, would I have to pay car sales tax? If yes, how much would that be?
Would you suggest to keep my car registered in Richmond?

Thanks for help!!!

Here is the link for the Illinois Secretary of State "New to Illinois Driving" section: New to Illinois Driving - Frequently Asked Questions. I didn't see anything about paying sales tax on a vehicle that you already paid sales tax for. I can't imagine that they would do that. Some cities and towns in Illinois do have an annual sticker, but Naperville is not one of them. Naperville does have a Secretary of State facility in town, so once you move you will be able to handle the transfer pretty easily. You are required to get a new driver's license and register your car here within 90 days, I believe.

The only thing I can think of you'll have to pay is the $78.00 (non-vanity plates) to register your plates and the fee for a new license ($10??) I have not heard of paying a tax on your car when you bring it into IL.

When I lived in VA there was a property tax on cars, no vanity plates, no radar detectors and twice a year inspection. I think some of that has changed.

Hearsay is on a distinguished road
We had 2 vehicles when we moved to Naperville in 2006. The purchased vehicle was 2 years old and we did not have to pay any sales tax on it. I can't remember what the time frame was - as long as the vehicle had been purchased more than 6 months or a year or something, no tax was owed.

The leased one was a pain to deal with - we had to calculate IL sales tax, depreciate that amount by 2% a month that we had owned the vehicle, then subtract the tax we had already paid in our former state. Also, they charged a late fee if you didn't do it within 30 days of bringing the vehicle into the state. Plus new tags and license fees.

I don't recall anything specific to Naperville, though. It was a Dept of State requirement.

No, you do not have to pay sales tax if you have already paid it in another state.
