Default Is Berwyn a safe town to live in?

There's already a quite lengthy thread on Berwyn: http://www.city-data.com/forum/chica...o-fill-me.html

IMO Berwyn is fine as long as you don't have any kids to put through school.

::looks at profile picture:: I have an extra room in my house in Lansing. Not west, but I'd be very happy to have you in my home. j/k

Just my two cents, you won't have a problem finding low-crime areas in Berwyn.

I would stay south of 26th St. to make sure you're in a "safer" part of town. I grew up in North Berwyn and I think it's gone downhill since then...it was getting bad when I was there like 10 years ago. That's just me being a girl, others can chime in if they think differently Berwyn's not that bad, I still hang out there a lot!

I grew up in Berwyn around 28th and Wenonah Ave. My grandparents used to live on Oak Park Ave and 16th St. I graduated from Morton West High School. Berwyn used to be comprised mostly of European people; Czech, German, Italian, Polish, but now I think it has mostly become hispanic over the past 2 decades. Cermak Rd has mostly hispanic businesses on it as compared to the Bohemian bakeries and restaurants that used to be there. North Berwyn, which is close to 12th St/ Roosevelt Rd, always had a reputation for being a little more "active" as far as crime goes. East Berwyn, which is close to the Cicero border, was also not a desirable location. I would say anything south of 26th St and west of Oak Park Ave probably would be your best bet as far as "safety" goes and less crime. South Berwyn has the majority of the old Victorian houses. One thing for sure Berwyn has is beautiful bungalow homes. They are solidly built, roomy, and very much "home". Riverside Dr. has some exquisite examples. When I was growing up in Berwyn it definately was a safe, homey community that was tightly knit with tradition. Now it has changed into something I don't even recognize. You might want to brush up on your Spanish just in case.

Good luck.

Interesting. My husband grew up in Berwyn. They moved to Florida when he was 12, which was in 1982. We wondered what the area was now like.

Just make sure you watch for cars if you're picking mushrooms in the middle of 22nd St.
