Chicago Heights is really not that bad. Depending on what part you live in. Since I live in the border of Homewood and Glenwood. But once you get in the heart of Chicago Heights, the first thing that will come to your head is "Wow, this is a bad town!". Well its not. Its just old and and ghetto. That's why people say its bad. Bloom High School is not that bad either. Its just old (107 years old). And poor. They have a pool, but they don't use it because they can't afford the water, also they can't shower. What the city needs to do is build a bigger and better Bloom High School! Because Bloom is falling apart. Also, with one little fight like once a month people start saying it's a bad school. And Bloom High School needs to come up with better rules to keep Bloom a better high school. WE CAN ALL FIGHT FOR A BETTER AND BIGGER BLOOM HIGH SCHOOL UNTIL WE GET WHAT WE WANT! So what ever people say about Chicago Heights, for example, "Chicago Heights is a horrible place"...well its not but people believe them.

But once you get in the heart of Chicago Heights, the first thing that will come to your head is "Wow, this is a bad town!". Well its not. Its just old and and ghetto. That's why people say its bad. Yes, there is some gang members but they are leaving this town now and looking for a place where they think its best for them to gang bang. Bloom High School is not that bad either. Its just old (107 years old). And poor. They have a pool, but they don't use it because they can't afford the water, also they can't shower. People are also making it seem bad beacuse of their little fights they have atleast once a month. What the city needs to do is build a bigger and better Bloom High School! Because Bloom is falling apart. And Bloom High School needs to come up with better rules to keep Bloom a better high school. I grew up in Chicago Heights. The town as a whole is racially diverse, White, Black, Hispanic. However, atleast historically it is segregated, ie. Blacks on the East side and West sides, Hispanic on the South side, and White in the central and North sides of town. That however is changing, as more Black and hispanic residents are moving in to once predominantly white parts of town.
Chicago Heights is one of the older suburbs in the Chicagoland area, the population grew rapidly in the early 1900's to about 1940 from an influx of immigrants, mostly Italian and Polish. Al Capone even had a residence in Chicago Heights. The Italian immigrants, and their direct descendants have been a big part of the history of Chicago Heights.
Jerry Colangelo, is a Bloom High School graduate, and native son of Chicago Heights. He founded the Phoenix Suns, and Arizona Diamondbacks, and for the most part is one of the most respected executives in professional sports.
On an uglier note, Chicago Heights has been plagued by the Mafia for as far back as anyone can count. In the past, Chicago Heights has been one of the Chicago Outfits (what mob experts call) "street crews". In the early 90's the Feds busted the mob infested Chicago Heights City Hall and Police Departments, leading to convictions and prison terms for many. In the early 90's USA TODAY reffered to Chicago Heights as "one of the most corrupt cities in America."
Chicago Heights, and the southern suburbs in general were mostly blue collar industrial. When globalization, and the economic shift in the U.S.sent industrial jobs overseas, Chicago Heights, like the rest of the South Suburbs, and any other Industrial part of country suffered greatly economically. It has never reall¥ recovered.
Not by any measure, by a reasonable, sane human being is Chicago Heights a great town. True, it does (as bizarre as it is) mean something to alot of people. Economically, you have some empty store fronts, Business is just not sustainable in Chicago Heights depsite efforts at City hall, economically the town remains in stagnation.
There are some cool houses in Chicago Heights, located mostly in the Country Club Road and Euclid areas, that are historic houses and districts, but most of the town in 1950's era tract homes.
As far as schools go, public education is underfunded and basically atrocious. There are options other than public education for K to 8th grade, as well as High School, which if you can afford, you might want to check out. For K thru 8 schooling you have Catholic schools, St. Agnes, and St. Kieran(located in neighboring glenwood), and also St. Paul's(a Lutheran day school) For High School there is Marian Catholic, a private high school that offers a very good education, and is a great alternative to the underfunded Bloom High school, that continues to suffer from State and Federal cutbacks in Public education.
All in all I would not recommend moving to Chicago Heights.

Underground Places
I Have Lived In Chicago Heights My Whole Life And Enjoyed Hearing About The History Of It. I Heard Many Things That There Are Undergound Passage Ways Leading All Over The Place And The Only Way To Get Inside Is Through Houses In The Basement. I Heard About A Bar On The Hill In Chicago Heights There Is A Door That Leads Underground Somewere For A Long Distance. I Am Very Interested In Exploring/seeing These So Called Places. If Anyone Knows About These Places And Would Like To Explore Them Please Feel Free To Contact Me Anytime.

I agree with cromag, People always defend the towns they live in because its their home. I've read many many posts on here that are strictly opinions and none of them are based on facts at all. Chicago heights is far from the greatest city in the U.S. Most of us who are familiar with it know this, but someone from out of town may not if they have never been there.

This post was started in feb of 07 !! I find it interesting how people drudge through pages and pages to find a meaningless post when there are so many informative or at least relative ones.

You have to live out here to say anything about it. Alot of people confuse Ford Hts with Chgo Hts. Not the same.
