I live in Lake Bluff - about a 20-25 minute commute to Deerfield. We absolutely love it. Great (very little) downtown, but Lake Forest is only about a mile away. It's right on the lake and my daughter rides horses in nearby Libertyville, about 10 minutes west (also a very good choice). It's a very small town and everyone knows (or knows of) everyone. Every teacher in the school will know your child's name by the third week of school and, because it's so small, the kids welcome new faces - everyone wants to be friends with the "new kid".

LB is very wooded and the lots are smaller and homes generally older (and well kept) with lots of character. You may find a newly constructed home here and there from the teardowns, but they usually don't go for under 1.2 million. So you won't get a huge house (or lot) for your money, but you will get a great neighborhood where your kids are safe and still ride their bikes all around town in packs (and down to the beach, pool or uptown). In the summer there are free concerts "on the green" in the center of town where everyone brings a picnic (and a bottle of wine), family movie nights at the beach, pumpkinfest in the fall, beach parties, block parties and a 4th of July parade and family carnival that people come from all around to see.

as far as the kids from Barrington looking down on Barrington Hills or N Barrington etc, cause there are like 10 different barringtons, its a posh town (all of them are) and you have to expect that. my mom grew up in barrington and she said it hasnt changed in YEARS. as far as hawthorn woods goes, not to confuse you back to your original idea, it is a FANTASTIC area i used to work there. it is quiet with plenty of options for your kids as far as horseback riding in the area and tennis and gymnastics. if you'd like i will find the local sites for you and repost them so you can take a look. If you'd like me to, please email me. I'll help out in any way possible. Good Luck.

Having grown up in South Barrington (moved from NJ, in fact, when I was 10), I can assure you that the "townies" don't look down at the outside areas... in fact, it could be just the opposite as the houses in SB & BH are usually more spectacular than anything you'd get downtown. I wouldn't necessarily zero in on Barrington, though, unless you live in North Barrington (and part of Barrington Hills) as that would be a pretty hefty commute to Deerfield (there is no major highway for your husband to take; he'd likely have to stick with Half Day Rd.). Wynstone is one that I would put on your radar, though, as that wouldn't be a bad commute and it is a beautiful community (it would be considered North Barrington). Wynstone Realty Hawthorn Woods has a fantastic new golf community Chicago Golf Courses - Hawthorn Woods Golf Club - Hawthorn Woods, IL with a wide range of homes and TONS of kids of all ages. This is a great bet if you want a new home. On the other hand, you may want to consider Lake Forest in your search. It is a beautiful community with a fantastic downtown and excellent schools not to mention an easy commute to Deerfield. Some may say that LF is snobby but no more than any North Shore town and your kids will have the "best of the best" which is most important. All is horse country so you will have no problem finding a place to ride or board. My realtor said that it is a great time to buy in the the notoriously pricey areas (in particular Lake Forest and Barrington) as it seems the "bottom has fallen out" and prices have dropped considerably. Good luck!

There are some excellent properties for sale in the North barrington area. But North Barrington is not LZ schools. Only the Wauconda township portion of it is. Most of North Barrington is Barrington 220.

Wynstone is North Barrington, and on the pricey side (gated community) but there are some unincorporated homes north of there that are large properties and wooded, rather than a defined manicured community. Again Barrington schools. Look for Timber Lake area.

Access from Barrington, North Barrington, Lake Barrington to the North suburbs (like DeerField) is on Hwy 22 or Hwy 176, or Hwy 120. Barrington to North Barrington is only 5 minutes on Hwy 59, so it isn't an excessive commute from any of those over any other. Though South Barrington and Barrington Hills are longer.
