Aurora?
I've read that Aurora is not the best city to live in, but i recieved a really good scholarship from Aurora University. Is the school in a good area of the city? Will I be able to find a safe apartment around there, and for what price? The thing is, I dont want to live in a city that I hate I visited there about 3 weeks ago and downtown looked... terribly run-down and not safe! On another note, whats the rock music scene like in Aurora? Will a punk loving, tree hugging, vegan fit in ? Thanks for the help

The far eastern edges of Aurora have some nice apartments, or you can try western Naperville, where youd definitely fit in more. Not much of a punk scene in either of those cities, but there are some around. How much can you afford on rent?

The downtown of aurora is pretty shady as is the east side. If you avoid those areas then you will be ok. The city is quite diverse and i'm sure you will fit in fine.
As for the music scene it's quite good. There is a bar called the end zone on farnsworth that has shows all the time, often punk ones. There also is dougs rockhouse in the same area off of farnsworth on indian trail road that has shows often too.

The area around Aurora University is all residential. It is a safe neighborhood. A number of my son's friends are students at AU. They like it there. They live in the dorms, so I cannot advise about apartments. I don't know where any are in that area. As far as nightlife, my son is almost 20 and since most of his friends are athletes etc. they have never been into the rock nightlife. you will have to investigate that by looking online! you might try the aurora area convention and visitors bureau for musical venues!

I agree with the previous comment that AU is in a safe neighborhood. I have no clue about the punk/bar scene in/around Aurora but I'm sure some of the "hipper" members here could help you out. Around the areas of Rt. 59 (Aurora/Naperville) you should be able to find all kinds of nice apartments but they won't be cheap. There is an AMLI at Oakhurst on Liberty, Hunter's Glen Apartments on New York St, Chesapeake Landing on Odgen and Alara at Summerfield on Odgen at Farnsworth. Just some suggestions but there are many more out there. I've been in a few units at AMLI, Chesapeake and Alara and they seemed nice.

Definitely stay around east aurora/west Naperville along route 59. Traffic is a nightmare but I think you'll really like the area. It's basically Naperville. If I'm not mistaken, Aurora University is just southwest of downtown. Not too bad of a drive.

Their are apartments on the far western parts of Aurora sitting on Indian Trail between Randall and Highland around $1000 to $1400. These apt. are in a good area approx. 10 to 15 mins. from the school. This area in far from punk out.
