Hello All,

Planning a relocation from Ann Arbor, MI to the N. or NW burbs area, have primarily focused my research on Evanston, although finally decided to ask the locals for help. We are a young family, I'll be employed either at Nwestern or downtown, my wife will most likely be working downtown, also have a 3 year old. Any considerations regarding pre-schools and the most fitting areas for a younger family? I understand my questions are rather vague, but I am looking for the most comprehensive opinion I can get.

Much Thanks..

There are plenty folks ga-ga over Evanston on the board. If you work in Evanston it is not a bad option, though it has plenty of downsides, probably not all that different from Ann Arbor. For a person with a college-town background I can't of any place better.

If your spouse is working downtown it is not a bad a commute from Evanston.

Evanston has a range of preschools, none particularly inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.

Bring plenty of money, even with the drop in housing prices there are no bargins.

Thanks for the reply, I've noticed the varying opinions of Evanston, and having been there and to almost every sub of Chicago myself I can't say that I was blown away, although for my purposes it seems a good fit. Is the metra system a fairly reliable and cost effective way of commuting in the city?

METRA is OK as long as you are heading into the city and your workplace is fairly close to the tracks.

Do realize that the CTA purple line also serves the Loop to Evanston. Generally, on short runs, it is much cheaper to rely on the CTA.
