Smile Relocating to Springfield?

Thinking of relocating to Springfield, Ill or the Chicago area from California...

I am a middle school teacher (6th grade). The economy is very bleak for education here....Cost of Living is too high for the quality of life.

Any practical insight, suggestions?

Thanks!

Cost of living in the Springfield area is much less than the Chicago area. 3-4 hours to Chicago, 1.5 hours to St Louis.
