you went to Midwestern, spouse worked in Chicago and had a daughter in middle school? Also, this is big, only wanted to spend 170-180k on 3bdrm house to live in for about 6 years. I'm trying to decide if going to Midwestern will be a fit for our family. I like the idea of living near Chicago and taking advantage of the city, but afraid we can't afford it. We don't care about small house/small yard or even duplex but needs to be somewhere safe with a good public high school.

Listen, I'm an advocate of buying ... I'm a real estate agent after all. ;-)

But why not rent?

You can probably get into a better home in a better school district by renting instead of buying ... especially since this won't be a lifetime purchase.

$180 in the suburbs is going to mean a LONG commute or reconsidering a condo.

The best deals right now seem to be rentals.

Well the only problem is we have 3 cats, daughter will be crushed if we have to give any of them up. I don't think many apts. will allow that, but maybe if we found a house to rent with understanding landlord. Do you think I should go for the interview at Midwestern?

Basically all the employment predictions are extremely positive for the healthcare fields Midwestern University specializes in. It is almost certainly a very smart idea to shift your career in that direction.

Just about any town a reasonable distance from Midwestern U is going to be too expensive to buy a house in the category that you indicated. Frankly I do not think that there are any acceptable condos in that price range.

You are going to need to rent, even then the rental prices for even a two bedroom two bath unit are probably going to be hard to find unless your target is about $900 - 1000 for a place that is not really luxury.

Three cats is tough. I think your only hope is a VERY large damage/security deposit AND a VERY understanding landlord. One cat == OK. Two cats == maybe. THREE cats == "Holy smokes I'll have to budget for all new carpet, maybe repairs to floors and walls...". If you could DOUBLE or TRIPLE the damage deposit it would go a long way to making the landlord feel better AND you have to find a SMALL landlord, because no body with a lot of tenants is going to let YOU do this and THEN hear all the the other tenants beg for such treatment. Very bad precedent...
