you might check with the community college that services your area. I know you said you were looking for one-on-one tuturing, so check with sylvan, or learning tree. Most community colleges do offer group study classes, often offered at the local high school. cost for those is around $70 or so. don't know about the private classes.

Doesn't the high school have a list of offerings? If you can do something with little / no disruption it probably has the best chance of at least having the student not whine too loudly...

Sometimes the best preparation is no preparation. One of my best friends spent many hours with special ACT tutoring only to end up scoring a 19. I had to make up the test at a later date because I was bedridden with chickenpox and I ended up scoring a 26 with no studying on my first day back to school while still feeling feverish. A little too much preparation might actually be a little counterproductive, the ACT already covers stuff kids already know, so kids should just go in with a clear mind. Students should go in on testing day knowing which subjects they're good at and to focus on answering those subjects' questions as their strengths, that's all.

back when I was in high school..a long time ago, we never had study guides etc for standardized tests. we just showed up with our number 2 pencils! If a student doesn't want to sit through a class or spend that much money etc for tutoring, they do sell the study guides at borders etc. for around $25 or so. It has practice tests etc. there is also the college board website that has study tests etc available for free.
