Clearly not much! You're afraid of Chicago and think all of Chicagoland is liberal. Your credibility is shot on these issues.

I'm not afraid of Chicago, I believe anybody who realizes a particular city has approximately 1,000-1,300 murders per year, would be foolish not to regard the city as very dangerous.
If Chicago wasn't a bastion of liberalism and leftism, then the citizens would rise up, throw out the Daley political machine, and restore the Constitution (specifically the Second Amendment). Chicago exists as though it is its own little world, a tinpot marxist banana republic.

Well, no doubt, I have some biases, and I grew up in the south, so I have some degree of intimacy with the region. I mentioned the south because its well known as a place where the philosophy of limited government generally prevails. Don't know much about Appalachia other than that region is economically stagnant. Most of the Midwest suburbia is liberal (at least more than the south), and unions are the strongest in this region. The Pacific northwest is fairly liberal in the metro regions although the smaller towns can be quite conservative. There definitely is a strain of libertarianism out west that I find more attractive than the social conservatism of the south, although I get the sense that the entire west (including Rocky Mountain interior) is trending liberal/blue.
In other words, the whole country (with the exception of the south) seems to be trending in an anti-conservative direction. I'm sure there are a few pockets here or there even in places like MA and CA that are conservative, but if one was seeking a place where conservatives don't feel like animals trapped in an isolated wildlife reservation, the south is probably the place to be.

I don't dispute the fact that Chicago has too many murders. I do dispute your claim that Chicago has 1000-1300 murders per year.
Here is the actual data going back to 1990:
1990: 851
1991: 927
1992: 943
1993: 931
1994: 929
1995: 827
1996: 789
1997: 759
1998: 704
1999: 641
2000: 628
2001: 666
2002: 647
2003: 598
2004: 448
2005: 449
2006: 467
2007: 442
2008: 508

If you're going to make the case that Chicago is a crime-ridden hell-hole, at least use real data not made up statistics.

The last article I read about Chicago referenced approximately 1,000 murders per year in the city and immediate metro area. From the numbers you present, there are clearly a number of years where the murder rate was darn near 1,000. Do you bear in mind that some people simply vanish and are never seen again, I don't know if that would be to the tune of 100-200 per year, but it is safe to assume at least 10-20% of the "missing persons" cases in Chicago are actually murders. Still, your point was well-made. The murder rate is high, but not as high as I thought or suggested. Still, it does seem very high.

A murder rate takes population into account, and is usually presented as a per capita figure. You mean murder tally. In terms of per capita murder rate, Chicago isn't even in the top 10--while many red-state cities are quite high (like Dallas, Atlanta, etc.).
Heck, New York City had the highest total number of murders this year, but it's one of the safest large cities in the country now (if not the safest).

I have not read this thread. However, moving from the south to Hinsdale this has GREATLY peaked my interest!! Is Hinsdale conservative? My realtor had told me it was. My reasoning for not moving to the North Shore - which is where I grew up.
Any conservative republican moms out there?? Hinsdale area?

Nowhere in the North is conservative like the South. Thank God.

Wait, let me get this straight-you didnt move to the North Shore, a beautiful desired area with great schools because you thought it wasnt ''conservative'' ? You moved to Hindsdale because you were told it was? This is your criteria? Do you really think that a town is all one way? Are you afraid of what ? Scarey democrats will influence your kids? Talk about generalizations, holy smokes. Another generalization is all Southerners are red necks who chew ''tobacky'' and drive pick ups.
