Not "funny" at all. Just stupid. I can see how someone in law enforcement who lives in Elmwood Park might view the world as some kind of racial struggle, but the majority of the country doesn't really view things this way. And it's just a really silly way to look at things.

Its funny how so many on this thread may try to gang up on me based on my real life experiences. I guess my first question is where did you grow up and maybe I can then see why you feel a certain way. I actually am no way alone in my beliefs- I just vocalize much more- I speak from the heart and am very passionate as to what I believe. I believe that the 1950s was the greatest time this country ever experienced-at least because this liberal propaganda was not nearly as bad as now. I, my friend, am 6'2, 230 pounds of solid man- workout at the gym 6 days a week- fought many times in my life- both on the street and in the gym. I hate to talk tough because its cowardly to do so on an internet blog- but if you think you would knock my teeth out- you may be sorry that stupidity ever spewed out of your fragile mouth. I would be happy to come to Armands and prove all of my points in person. Just tell me when . FYI- I anger very easy also- sometimes too easy.

What do you expect, its a discussion forum, we're supposed to have a clash of opinions. Besides, since younger, internet-savvy Americans are more socially liberal than the average American, its not surprising your perspective is a minority one. Nevertheless, you're perfectly entitled to hold it, but not entitled to be unchallenged.

It's one thing to have opinions, and another thing entirely to attack people based on race or sexual orientation. And specifically stating you disapprove of "interracial marriage" is really an extreme, racist thing to say. Most conservatives I know would find this view racist. And if you specifically said things like this to my face, you would be hurting. That's all I'm saying.

Look, I know a lot of people like you. I grew up with one foot each in the middle class and working class, and am comfortable around both. My own father-in-law is an ex-iron worker from a rough, working class family who got to college by playing offensive line as an all-American. He's as conservative as they come and the ultimate tough guy. But even he would know better than to say garbage like that to my face knowing my family background.

You should check out Smithtown on Long Island in NY. There they jockeyed the list of people eligible for Sec. 8 housing so that minorities never got to the top. Everyone in that town receiving section 8 housing assistance is white. And I guess you recognize that there are more whites than minorities receiving government assistance in the US?

Your thoughts on intermarriage are certainly out of the fifties. While you may think things were wonderful then, that is certainly a minority view because there were many situations which needed improvement. I think that hiring is much more bottom-line now and much more concerned with what a person can accomplish (even with affirmative action) then it was in eras where family pedigrees were considered. And what was legacy admission to colleges (like George Bush enjoyed) anything but affirmative action?

I am somewhat concerned with you being in law enforcement. As a conservative police lieutenant explained to me, "You can't really be a cop without the ability to get along with different kinds of people." Its one thing to hav eopinions but your desire that kind stay with kind does not sound like an ability to deal with all types of folks.

Finally, I am a knee-jerk liberal, 6', 220 lbs, and almost 60 years old. The last time someone bothered me in the street (three months ago) I whipped his little butt.

Well, we know he's not CPD because he lives in Elmwood Park. Unless he's cheating the residency requirement... It would be pretty stupid for a cop to admit to cheating the residency requirement while posting racist rants on a public forum. Without posters like promis1, this forum would be boring! we should thank him for his posts as they make for the most interesting conversations in this suburbs forum plus it helps the work day go by faster. I happen to like him because he's not afraid to go against the grain and stand up for what he believes in. I would appreciate that quality in almost anyone. it is rare today to see people like that.

also if you want to get technical, it is abnormal to see to men holding hands or kissing. it's just the facts. why? because until same sex couple out number natural couples, then they will continue to be abnormal. and i am no homophobe. the guy 2 cubicles down from me is gay and he's alright. there's a lot of gays in chicago and it is impossible not to run in to them on a daily (week day) basis if you happen to work with them.

Depends on where you live. It's completely normal in my neck of the woods. I'd say it's normal in any downtown area including the Loop. It's normal in malls like Old Orchard and Woodfield. You guys are sheltered in your South and West Suburban towns.
