Default Moving to chicago

Due to job change my family (which includes kids) have to relocate to chicago from Detroit in few weeks. My job will be in downtown. I had asked couple of my friends where to look for a 2 bedroom apartment. Our budget is in range 1000 $ - 1200$ ....The deciding factors are :

1) Access to either CTA or Metra....so that i do not spend much time in driving to downtown....i can sit in a train for 50 mins

2) Safe and affordable neighbourhood.....

Some of my friends who had earlier lived in chicago mentioned couple of places :

1) Des plaines

2) Mount prospect

3) Rolling meadows

4) Schaumburg

5) libertiville

I wanted a second opinion . I am looking at you guys for advice.....

I second the Oak Park thing.

Its really close to the city, relatively inexpensive, and has a pretty nice downtown itself.

We're moving away from it after 15 years, we'll miss it. But not the winters...
