How sad...people just lie and unfortunately I am the only one here that really defends the town...
I must say that I feel safer in CCH than most ANYWHERE I've been in Chicago (with the exception of Beverly...)

So what did you not like about Beverly? Were the whites harrassing you too much?

Life in the city is expensive, busy and I couldn't have a pet where I lived. Now, I can have as many as I please The pet issue was -definitely- a problem. I'd say it was number 3.
I'm pretty immune to racism at this point...I pretty much get used to people assuming I am black or something, so I hear but I don't hear, and I see, but I don't see. There isn't much I can do about it. No, they were not a reason for my move, not even slightly. I may have thought about it, but if that's all I was concerned about, I'd never have left. Sometimes I did feel left out at community events...but oh well now I'm not

WTF!!!! I grew up in CCH. I went to Southwood and Hillcrest. My wife grew up in CCH. There is absolutely, positively nothing wrong with CCH. Crime, with the exception of the domestic murders in Summer '08--not gang murders (there is a difference)--it is one of the most safest parts of the south Suburbs and the entire Chicagoland region. I live in Cal City (which ain't THAT bad), but I don't feel as safe. I work in Harvey (enough said). CCH IS NO WHERE NEAR AS BAD AS THOSE CITIES!!!! I feel just as safe in CCH as I feel in Tinley Park or Oak Forest and YES even Orland Park or Oak Lawn. You do have your occasional bad seed, but other than that, it's perfectly safe. On the other, there is a problem with the schools. Now before I continue CCH is in two High School Districts (Mainly Bremen and Rich). So most students go to either Hillcrest or Rich Central with a small portion in Fawn Ridge going to Tinley Park HS. Now I went to Hillcrest, which seems to have the worse rep. While there, I have never seen anyone get cracked up side their skull with a 2x4. Yes, there were occasional fights, but there aren't any drive-by's or kids getting caught in crossfire. There is virtually no gang problems. Yes, some people throw up the GD, 4's VL's or Mo signs and even shake up. But trust me, even those people are harmless and wouldn't survive in the REAL HOOD!!! I've walked home and took the bus from school with very little problems. However, the biggest problem that most people have with the schools are the test scores. They actually have a pretty good curriculum, but the ISAT, PSAE and ACT scores, especially in Math and Science are significantly low. Especially, when you consider the fact that CCH, Hazelcrest and even parts of Markham are middle to upper middle-class. They also can do better with preparing students for college in my opinion. With that said, the majority of the graduates still go to college and do fine after high school. The student/teacher ratio is pretty decent. Most teachers are pretty good with some bad seeds. The Math and Science department could use a makeover, but, nonetheless, students still get a pretty well rounded education. They also have a pretty good sports program. They have a Large footballl, baseball and softball field. They also have a nice olympic-size swimming pool, a decent weightroom and two basketball and three tennis courts. They have one of the largest well-known bands in the regions (at least when I went there) and various other extra curricular activities. There's pretty decent size library with up to date computers and computer software. I can go on and on. Even with its problems, I would still prefer Hillcrest over Fenger and Robeson or even Thornton and Bloom Township. Also, quite recently, large scale shopping has been developing on 167th street with one the the largest Walmarts in the region along with a large movie theater. They also have a small, but very popular amphitheater that have featured some very well-known artist. The Park district is pretty top-notch. They recently built a large Rec center; there's a large walking/bike trail with 2 or 3 beautiful baseball fields along with a large and very nice peewee football field for the Cougars. Adkins park isn't bad either. My point is that CCH is just like any suburb. Mostly, everyone is middle to upper middle class. The houses are mid-size to big to very big. For example, I grew up in a 2 story, 4 big bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths home with a large living room, dining room and family along with a large sit in kitchen. It had a complete basement with a laundry room, a hug back yard that featured a pool, huge patio 2 apple trees and a 2-car garage. If you thinks that's big, there are homes in CCH that are bigger than where I grew especially in Marycrest and Fawn Ridge (I don't know about the apple trees though. lol) . All my friend's parents where middle class with fairly decent size homes. Yes there are some section 8 folks like in Province town, Knottingate and I think Nob hill other parts of CCH, but the majority of them live in other suburbs. The vast majority of "Project People" are moving to Harvey, Riverdale, Da Heights, Cal City, Cal Park, Dolton, Blue Island, Dixmoor, Pheonix, Ford Heights, Park Forest, Robbins and even Midlothian, Posen and Alsip. Although, I don't have a big problem with Section 8 folks, very few of them are moving to CCH. This mainly b/c there isn't a lot of affordable housing available. I don't think that CCH even have apartments. Most renter out here rent homes or rent-to-own. The wrote this long post to reassure people that CCH is a vibrant, safe and well-kept community with lots of amenities. I would move there today if I could afford it, even with the bad schools (this can be fixed).

If you think what im saying is complete BS, watch House Hunters on HGTV.

I know this post is old, but I had to respond to this nonsense. I personally believe that whites are more concern with how many Blacks and Mexicans are in their neighborhoods than the school system and stainless f*$*ing steel. As far as standards, I'm Black and I have very high, but I have very low little income; therefore, stainless still...hmm?... just isn't on my wish list. I've watched HGTV and House Hunters. I've never saw a Black or Hispanic turn down a house because it has too much stainless steel. I've seen them turn down a house because they didn't like or it was too much money. But, I have never known anyone who has turned down a color TV for a Black-and-White one. Also, I grew up in Country Club Hills and currently live in Cal City where there are plenty of Blacks and Plenty of commercial businesses. Yes, we shop in white areas like Orland. Who the hell doesn't shop in Orland!!! It's like downtown!!! On the contrary. I've seen whites in Rivers Oaks and CCH's Walmart, Loews Theater, Firth Third Banks and Sonics. Hell, I've even seen whites in Harold's on 167th off Pulaski and Baba's on Cicero. To conclude, your argument is weak and borderline racist.

Correction: No more section 8. Nob Hill has less section 8 than the other two you mentioned. The only bad area in CCH is Provincetown. I'd advise people to wait a while for CCH police to clean that area up before an outsider moves in. Still relatively safe, but brings down Ward 5.
I agree with the rest of what you are saying. The schools are not bad. They still pass standardized tests, have good attendance, etc. I wouldn't mind teaching there in the future. I kinda look forward to seeing how that goes.

I must say that the Harold's, and the Wendy's do not have addresses in CCH. They are on Markham property.
I disagree with people who say there isn't any shopping here. The mall/shopping center on 167th street is always busy, and I see all races shopping there, and I actually like shopping there. I do most of my shopping now (I have established that I really like doing at these two places) at Walmart on 167th or Target on 191st and Harlem right across the way in Tinley Park.
As far as stainless steel, I prefer NOT to have it. I do not like the look of stainless steel. I do like color tv (lol!!!)
Get used to borderline racist postings here. I live in CCH, and I do plan to move. I hate that people feel the way that they do about my town, but oh well. There isn't much I can do or say to change how they feel.
Meanwhile, I encourage my friends to look for homes here because of the fact that I enjoy being here, and I can afford to be here. I went to open houses at a condo in Wilmette before, as well as a few places in Hyde Park, Hazel Crest, as well as Oak Forest. I liked all of the places and the areas they were in.
SORRY I kinda rambled, but hell, I'm just responding with my 2 cents (lol BRU67!)
