markham or harvey?
Hey all
I'm coming from little rock, arkansas. White 28 yo male. I've seen some bad areas but markham and harvey seem to have real bad reps..anyway I have to live in one or the other (please don't ask why). Which would you recommend?
How are they the same or different?
How is the crime, gangs, drugs?
Thanks in advance

That's like asking if you'd rather get kneecapped or kicked in the balls. I have to say your scenario sounds a little suspicious.

Ok. I live in Harvey, and you don't wont to live here. Its not the worst suburb in the country or even in Chicagoland, but its certainly at the top. The place is boring, and nothing for young people to do, unless you like strip clubs and the Joe River Center, where they have concerts(mainly hip hop) sometimes. The crime rate in Harvey is relatively high for a suburb of its size. The unemployment rate is at 22%(2007/2008 stats) and lets not get into poverty percentage. Now back on the Harvey and Markham comparision. Harvey and Markham are two seperate suburbs, but share the same zip code. Markham is a little bit better; the poverty, crime, and unemployment rate is not as high as Harvey. However, Markham is not much of an upgrade either. As far as picking between the two, I say Markham is better. To answer your other question, both of them have a rep for drugs and gangs, except Harvey is more known for that.

Why not Englewood? At least you will be closer to downtown.

You people are so ignorant. Markham has a crime index that is slightly higher than the national average. The rough parts of Markham are rough, but they do not represent the entire town. They skew the statistics to be higher than average. There are many ares of Markham that house working class blacks that want nothing more than their children to attend the best colleges possible. Harvey is a different story. The government is corrput and the city itself has fallen into chaos. Markham is by no means rich, but it's a fine place to raise a family as long as you are not in the tougher parts.

If you're 28 and white - you cannot live in either place. Seriously.

I guess you are right about the crime index, but it wasn't like that 5 years ago. I admit Markham could of been worse, its not the worst I seen in Chicagoland. I live in Harvey, so Markham crime don't phase me; I been to worse in the city. However, I wouldn't go as far saying its a great place to raise a family, I have to disagree about that. You are better off raising a family in Bolingbrook than in Markham or Harvey.

Well, there's a terrific place to buy some rocks just off Kedzie in Markham. Some say it's hard to find the really good stuff outside of Chicago, but Markham has come a long way in the last few decades!
Some find the Harvey reefer to be a little harsh, but it depends on your tastes.
My B.S. detector is also beeping on the OP's scenario.
