I'm 33, and I too was under legal drinking age went I lived in Glenview. That one bar, Langtry's, didn't have a problem with me going in just to play videogames when I was 14.
I'm not sure if that large farm house on Elm is still there or not, I think it was back in 2000, the last time I looked, but that was 8-9 years ago.
When you lived in Glenview, did they have an ice cream stand near the train station called The Dairy Bar? they served the best soft-serve ice cream, much better than Dairy Queen. It was tradition to buy some ice cream and eat it near the tracks.
I also terribly miss Roosevelt Pool and its park which had a massive tree house thing in the playground, it was the biggest one I'd ever seen. I saw recent pictures and video of both Roosevelt and Flick pools, I don't even recognize them now.
Glenview was more than just another Chicago suburb, it had meaning and importance, with the Naval Air Station, which closed down a few years after I had to leave Glenview. I've never missed a place I've lived except Glenview.
After I get settled in Florida, I will go through my collection of thousands of family pictures, and post all the ones that show recognizable parts of Glenview. I can't promise much, but I'll see what I can find. I'm hoping to find some pics of Hoffman school. I went to Hoffman before and after the addition of the million dollar gym. I don't know about any of the additions that happened during the 1990s and 2000s, just the addition of that gym that happened in the 80s.
I just re-read your original post, I remember the A&P grocery store on Harlem & Glenview Rd. It was still around during the early 80s because my mom shopped there. I'm pretty sure it was gone by the mid 80s, and most definitely by the late 80s. I wish I had I photo of it, but I know I don't. In place of A&P went a strip mall that had a convenience store called TJs.
That reminds me, my mom shopped alot at the Coal's grocrey store on Golf Road in Talismans Square/Talismans Village near the tall apartment building (which was in Glenview, not another suburb). The Coal's was replaced by 'The Grocery Bag' which was replaced by an Eagle Foods, which was later replaced by a Burlington Coat Factory store, by which time, we did most of our grocery shopping at the Jewel in Niles near Golf Mill. Of course, everyone in Glenview, as well as many people from other suburbs, know of 'The Works' Gyros place. We ate there often. Best Gyros in the entire USA, maybe the best in the entire world. It's still there, thankfully. I went to school with the kid who's dad either owns it, or just worked there, can't remember. We also shopped at the next-door Shasta Pet store.
Sorry for all these random places, I just had to mention them since they were on my mind, in case at least one of those places was familar to you.

It's been there as long as I can remember. I attached a pic below taken in 2002. My family got lucky there a long time ago (70's?). We went there on the last day of the season and the owner gave us his entire left-over stock of Dilly Bars!

I attached a pic I took of Roosevelt in 2002. I noticed they removed the high-dive boards. Damn lawyers...

Same here... Speaking of the Naval Air Station, my friends and I used to buy tons of helium balloons at the Hoffman School Fair and attach aluminum foil to the string below. We would launch them from Manor Park hoping to mess with their radar...haha
It was funny at the time.

I hope you find some good stuff. Let's keep this thread alive.

The Works....OMG, that place, and the game room that used to be next door were regular destinations of mine. That mall also had a Pacific Stereo store that let us bring our favorite records and crank them on the high-end equipment in the back.

No need to apologize. This thread is the place to discuss the random places in Glenview that will always mean something to us. By the way, the latest version of Google Earth now contains historical aerial photos that can be browsed via a timeline tool. Pretty cool stuff.

Having grown up in Niles (the neighbor to Glenview) it was really great to see these pics. I totally forgot about the water wheel in the Golf Mill shopping center - thanks for making me smile!!
A couple of years ago we sold the old family homestead, it was bitter sweet.
Our family home was a hybrid of sorts because my Dad was a tradesmen and they added a family room and a master bedroom/bath to the home. We had four realtors come out and tried to put a price on the home. Eventually I just called in the appraiser and we went with that number. The home sold in two days with multiple back up offers. Granted we did do some updating in the kitchen and basement. Also we removed all the carpeting, I hadn't seen those white oak floors since I was a kid. They were in pristeen shape and needed very little work.
Do you remember Super City located on Dempster and Harlem? It had a National Food Store and a couple of other smaller stores. Across the street was Big Boy Restaurant (now it is Kappys) and there was a TOPPS department store in the shopping center. Blowin out the cobwebs of the mind! Wooooo.

I don't remember the Super City or the TOPPS, but I remember the Big Boy restaurant with the huge Big Boy statue out front. That would be a good picture for someone to post.
I also remember a movie theater west of the Big Boy on the same side of the street. I think I saw "2001:A Space Odyssey" there.

They don't sound familiar. Dempster was just a little bit outside of my normal stomping grounds. Do you have any old pictures you could post?

I attached a few more Glenview area pics. Some old. Some not so old.
Here's Golf Mill in 1960.
Here's the shortcut my friends and I would take from Fontana Drive to the South East corner of Springman Junior High School.
And here's the view of Springman Junior High School on the other side of the shortcut.
Here's a 2008 picture of Elm Park Hill (now Richard E. Johns Park).

Thanks for posting those pic of The Dairy Bar and Roosevelt Pool. They bring back great memories.
I'm looking for 80s-era pics of Elm Park Field House, before Elm & Hoffman parks were re-landscaped, re-done, renamed, etc in the 1990s.

Yep! I took this very same route to Springman Junior High also! It's amazing to see that again. I attended Springman in 1988-1989 (7th grade) and 1989-1990 (8th grade). Actually I took that route to and from Springman more in 7th grade than 8th. In 8th I just went down Shermer Rd to Central Rd.
I had Mrs Jordan for my science class in 7th. I had Mr Tosh for P.E. in 8th. Those are the two oldest teachers I can remember that might've been there in the 70s. All my other teachers in 88-90 might've not been around before the 80s.

That hill was part of my life for the entire time I lived in Glenview from 1980 to 1993.

When I get a chance this spring or summer, I plan on stopping by the Glenview Public Library. I'm hoping to find a book with historical pictures of Glenview. If they have one I'll scan as many pictures as I can find and I'll post them here. I would like some more Elm Park pics as well. Maybe I can find a picture of the firemen having their Fourth of July firehose fight with the barrel hanging from the wire between two poles (hard to explain without a picture).
