Hello!
I am moving from Europe with my husband and my cat and we are considering Elgin, IL because we have some friends there.
What can you tell me about the town? Where do we have to look up for apartment for rent, which side-north,south..?
I am a psychologist and my husband is a refrigeration technician, do we have some chances to find a job?
Everything you have in mind about this place - please share!
Cheers,

Hi,parts of Elgin are a bit "iffy" and they do have a gang and large illegal immigrant situation(as do many cities/towns now). But the good part-it has lovely old neighborhoods with historic homes, affordable housing,a nice old downtown (trying to make a comeback),and much growth in South Elgin of new business and homes. It is close to the freeway and surrounded by nice commutabletowns (like Dundee-St Charles etc) Thats about all I can tell you, maybe someone else can help more

I understand that you'd be interested because you have friends there, but I definitely would not recommend Elgin. There is extremely little in the way of apartments, and what exists is in very poor neighborhoods with fairly high crime. There is a nice apartment community just north of Elgin on Route 31 (AMLI company), but they're pricey. I would recommend one of the nearby communities, i.e. Hoffman Estates or Algonquin over Elgin. If you're willing to go a little south, Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles are all nice, more on the pricey side. But echoing what nanannie said, Elgin generally is not headed in a good direction. Good luck!

Default Elgin

I would rather live in Elgin than Hoffman Estates of Schaumburg. It at least feels like a town. I am sure you could rent a small house there, for close to the rent of 2br apartment.

Regardless of what has been said here I live in Elgin and I can say it's generally headed in the right direction. I would chose a far west location.

Parts of Elgin are not nice at all. Gangs, Crime, Casino related crime, are some of the things to watch out for. Parts of Elgin are nice already. Schools are okay but you get what you pay for. A nice private school is Fox River Country Day School. One of the best in the state. My outlook for Elgin is that it will become another Naperville. I love what they are doing in terms of transportation and the riverfront downtown area. It is just like Naperville with a Casino.
