Question Interested in South Chicago Suburbs.......

I am contemplating a job change and move...the job would be in Lansing......I dont want a crazy commute and am moving to get out of the city for the most part. I am wondering about Tinley Park, Crestwood, Lemont or Orland Park.......any suggestions?? I dont have kids and am most interested in a less diversified population.

The suburbs you mentioned are mostly white and would probably be to your liking. The easiest commute to Lansing would be from Tinley Park and Orland Park. There is a poster called "At1WithNature" who feels similarly and can tell you more about both of those towns.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to live around people who look like you. I personally am not offended by posters who express that desire.

The best thing to use is logic. You should already know to avoid many of the southeast suburbs. Try more underrated ones like Hickory Hills, Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Justice, Willow Springs, or Hodgkins. The police, fire, education, and everything is fantastic there.

It depends on your price range and whether you want a house or apartment. Are you looking for something with a smaller town feel or do you not mind something suburban.

In general, Orland, Tinley, Lemont, and Crestwood are all pretty good choices, the first 3 being a little nicer than Crestwood, but there's nothing wrong with Crestwood. Orland and Tinley provide a pretty easy commute straight on I-80 to Lansing.

Or go the other way into Indiana and look at Munster & Dyer - both much closer than Orland & Tinley.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those. Add Schererville or St. John and the OP's got 4 towns that have what he/she wants.

Umm.. Don't know if you have been over to Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Justice, or Hodgkins Lately.... Their crime rate is on par with Lansing, "Diversity" is the same or higher than Lansing- and their schools all perform in the bottom 25%-50% of Chicagoland schools. Why move so far from work for the same thing? If you are fine with living in these southwest suburbs- you would be fine in Lansing. I've only been there a few times in the last couple of years- but it seems pretty nice- especially their downtown area. Cal city is not what it once was- but the greater Chicagoland area is filled with nice places surrounded by blighted areas. Just the way it is here... And speaking of surrounding areas- Thornton is a really nice area next door...

Lansing has a motel, right off of the Expressway, with a giant windmill on it. It's run down and has pimps and prostitutes working there. I don't know if this is the case with most towns, just saying. Lansing recently re-did many of their roads so infrastructure isn't a problem. Sure, the towns been changing but you could do worse than settle for Lansing. It all depends on you and what you are comfortable with. I wouldn't raise a girl in that town though, just saying. And the boy could easily run into the bad influences because they're all around but maybe that is true for any town.

Tinley Park and Orland Park are so large, and financially well to do, that their schools are pretty much excellent compared to the TF South's of the Chicagoland area. Lemont and Crestwood, are nice burbs as well but that's starting to get away from the towns that I am familar with. Tinley and Orland would be great but obviously cost a pretty penny. something i learned is you can pretty much judge a town based on its' metra station(s). Tinley has possibly the nicest metra station around off of oak park ave. That might be your best choice as it can be more affordable than Orland. Orland is a pipe dream for many, including myself. It's basically the best (safety, schools, property value, shopping, eateries, etc.) that the south burbs have to offer.

Lansing may be too diverse for the OP. Although it's still 65% white, the black and Latino population are gradually growing. I personally would recommend Munster. It has the lack of diversity, yet it's right next door to Lansing.
