I may have the chance to move to one of my favorite cities in the U.S. later this year. It is one of my favorites, but I am not a city dweller. I will be working on the southeast corner of Chicago between 94/90, by Lake Calumet?
I would like to keep my drive under 1 hr but be as close to small town/country living as possible. Indiana or Illinois?
Any suggestions where I can find the small town charm but be less than an hour from work or downtown?
I have always liked Aurora/Naperville area, but I believe it's on the wrong side of town for me since I will be working on the opposite side of downtown. The last thing I want to do to get home is to cross downtown. I'm thinking I should be heading south or SE/SW? Which cities in that direction would best fit my needs.
I don't care about schools...just small town living with the small town charm.
Thanks ahead of time for any replies.
I don't like being stuck in a neighborhood...rather have some land if possible. Woods/hills if possible too.
Close to area where I can hunt, fish, and do other outdoor activities.

Naperville and Aurora are well south of the Loop, so I wouldn't discount them. You should probably also look at towns in Will County. I'm not familiar with that area, so someone else would have more info for you.

If you are truly on the extreme SE edge of Chicago itself (and that seems to be the case if you are correct that work in near Lake Calumet), you might do better in NW Indiana, home prices tend to be more affordable, access to outdoor sports like hunting and fishing also tend to be more do-able (unlike in IL where much of the development {even stalled development...} has made land owners less likely to allow access to these things...)

Thanks for the replies. NW Indiana does seem like a good possibility.

Orland Park has some nice hills and forest preserves in the area. Not really "small town charm", but a nice place nonetheless.

Tough thing getting from Orland Park to SE side is that you'd probably be stuck trying to get on I80 then 80/294 and then the rather unpleasant trek up the Bishop Ford. There are probably worse commutes that involve more congested roads, but none that are quite so bleak...

You probably have some good options on both the Illinois and Indiana sides. If you want a smaller-town feel, no matter what you are going to have to fight some traffic at the very end of your commute. On the IL, side, there is the Crete area and some points further south along 1/394. From here, you have the Bishop Ford to contend with. On the Indiana side, Saint John, Crown Point, and Lowell. They are near US 41, which takes you all the way up, or to I-94 or I-90. This road moves well south, but there is a lot on it between US 30 and I-80/94, and gets jammed. None of these commutes should exceed an hour. I don't know first hand what it would be like to live and commute from Monee/ Peotone along I-57.

Small town feel, then look in Frankfort and Mokena. You can jump on 80 from either La Grange Rd or Harlem Ave and take that east to 94 north and shoot up 94 which puts you about a 30 min drive to and from work. Traffic on 80 is usually moving about 70-75 and 94 is about 65-70 MPH. If this is the type of town you are looking for http://oprt.org/maps/point-i.html (broken link) then Frankfort is for you.
