Hello,

Well I'm moving back to Chicago and looking for a few opinions. I'm a little lucky I guess because I did live in West Dundee before. Coming from South Florida now I want to get into an area with good schools as West Dundee was marginal.

I've considered a number of cities but have settled on a few. Barrington was high on the list but with spending less than 400k it’s hard to maintain our standard of living there. Looking at St. Charles or Geneva mostly because I like the towns and schools.

Although, now South Elgin has come into the picture. Most areas are using St. Charles North schools but I need some thoughts on the city. I don't really care for Elgin at all. Also I know what type of commute I'm looking at with St. Charles

Thanks for the help,

MCNE

If you can fit into an area of South Elgin that feeds into St. Charles school districts, go for it! South Elgin is quite nice, especially the areas near Randall Road, some very nice homes out there and with every type of shopping you can think of.

Yeah, the west part of South Elgin is White European, Elgin is Hispanic. It's quite easy to see that the school districts will be different.

My job as "Captain Obvious" is to ask: Where will work be? Confucious say "Do not put cart before horse"

Where I work is not really an issue because I can deal with the commute. I've settled on a few locations I like.

Just remember that when you're commuting downtown during one of our lovely winter snowstorms that strike right before rush hour. Or even commuting from St. Charles to Deerfield. Why put the strain on the kids and family by incuring a long commute??

Its not that long and I've lived in Chicago before so I'm familiar with the distances. I simply need information on what was posted nothing else. That's why I did not specify where I worked but thanks for the concern.

So you are asking for an opinion on St. Charles, Geneva, South Elgin? Go with Geneva or St. Charles before S. Elgin. Or are you looking for additional suggestions (as I perhaps mis-interpreted)? If you're looking for additional suggestions, many of us will ask housing budget, size, work location and recreational preferences to narrow down the list.

Thats funny....I left the area to move to the Florida Panhandle ! I love it here in Florida after spending 35 years in the western suburbs of Chicago. Id pass on South Elgin as its too close to Elgin and all the undesirables and Gangs. Id check out Batavia/Geneva/St. Charles for your budget . Forget Barrington too...the property taxes are insane . If you want to go a bit further south, consider Carpentersville . Youll get a nice house in any of these towns and have alot of money left over .

If you want consistently good schools, stay out of Dist 300. Most of Carpentersville is served by Dist. 300.
