I hear all sorts of crime and gang-related violence every night on the Berwyn channel of my police scanner. "Shots fired--officer down," a few weeks ago. Tons of domestic violence calls, etc, etc... I grew up there and it just seems to keep going down hill, glad I got out.

You should hear what's going on in even the nicest parts of Chicago... Police scanners terrify me in this city.

real gangbangers in berwyn
I don't know if the thugs in Berwyn are all suburban wannabes. Serranatas on cermak where I have gone to dinner and to go out, is all mexican. They strip search you when you walk in after 9pm and there are 6 police officers working the door, all armed.
Maybe this is technically Cicero or right on the border with Berywn. It is just west of central on cermak.
I like Berwyn way better than Cicero but prefer Oak Park, particularly for its schools.

This is the second time you've brought this up. To clarify, Serenata is in Cicero. It's not just technically in Cicero either -- it's several blocks into Cicero. You indicated in a previous post that you saw Berwyn police frisking people in that restaurant but I highly doubt that's possible.

Sure you aren't picking up another community's channel? Not saying you're lying but to my knowledge no police officer's been shot in Berwyn this summer. What date was it and where approximately did it happen? A Cicero police officer was injured by a motorist earlier this summer but other than that it's been quiet.

Indeed - Cicero. Since the border of Cicero and Berywn is Lombard Ave., Central and Cermak is quite far from Berwyn - ~8 blocks.

Yea, it's probably closer to Chicago than it is to Berwyn. I've been to it a couple times and it's ok. Nothing spectacular. Didn't see any signs of what Humbolt describes though. We were not searched. Maybe we look less dubious

I live just off Central and Cermak, and it is actually closer to Berwyn than to Cicero (Approx. 0.8 miles vs 1.2 miles)
I have been to Serenatas a couple of times before and I agree with BRU67, it is nothing spectacular (we weren't searched either...)
I don't find the Cicero area around Central and Cermak particularly bad. Regardless of that I find it very interesting how different Cermak road is in a stretch of just a couple of miles: just east of Cicero Avenue it is predominantly black, and just west of it is predominantly hispanic until Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, where it is more mixed I would say.
I would say that Berwyn is not for everybody, but it is not a terrible place to live either (The same for the parts of Cicero bordering Berwyn).. As previous poster mentioned, you can always send your kids to Oak Park private schools..

I grew up in LaGrange Park and have lived in North Berwyn for 10 years. Although Berwyn has it's problems it's nowhere near as bad as Cicero, West Aurora or Maywood. The problem is that you get that riff raff from Cicero and the West Side of Chicago and Berwyn's rep get's lumped in with them.
I live right off of 18th and Ridgeland and most of my neighbors are hard working decent people, but it depends where you live in Berwyn, just like most towns. For example, I wouldn't be caught dead after hours along Oak Park Ave. between 22nd and 16th ave. Section 8 heaven over there.....
