Default suburban chickens

Do any of you raise hens for eggs, or know anyone who does? I was investigating this idea and don't know of any local resources. I have a large yard and I don't believe we have any local ordiances banning it here. My biggest concern is the other animals it would attract.

Not sure what you mean by the coops attracting other animals... I grew up on a small family farm in a semi-rural/semi-suburban area (unincorporated Hinsdale), the chickens there never seemed to attract any animals. If you are talking about coyotes, we never had any, if you are talking about mice then you may want to get an outdoor cat (although we never had mouse problems either).

Unless you live in an unincorporated area, you really should look into the ordinances though, many suburbs don't allow for chicken coops.

Any livestock (rabbits) kept that eats grain and is housed outside, will attract mice/rats potentially unless you keep it scrupulously clean. Individual towns are different - you need to check before you get the birds. Really. And make sure you do NOT get a rooster. They are loud and can be heard for blocks around and crow starting at 3am and all day long as well. Your neighbors would NOT be happy.

Thanks. I've read raccoons are attracted by chickens and will kill them, and the mice thing makes sense. I know we have these around us already. I'm definitely taking my time doing the homework on this.
And Gardener - I agree 100% on the roosters!

we live in a semi rural area in western Kane county and there is still alot of farm land out here. we have an organic farmer that raises chickens/eggs. last year he had raccoons and coyotes kill 700 chickens!

If you live in a municipality (within city limits) there is most definitely ordinances regulated animals/farm etc.

Yep foxes too. Me - I would just get a nice quiet bunny rabbit that I could take inside when it was cold and at nighttime.
