we are a family of 4 moving this summer from virginia to the chicago area.
our oldest son is in college and our younges will start highschool next year.my housband's job is in Downer's Grove and we are trying to decide where to live considering that school quality is our number one priority.
since we are Jewish we would like to have a strong jewish community around us so areas like buffalo grove/deerfield/northbrook/highland park seem to be quite fitting, with schoold like Stevenson/Derfield high/Glennbrook, anyone have any advise? what is better?
our other option would be to rent for the next 4 years in one of those areas until our son goes off to college and at that point buy a condo downtown. again what suggestions do you guys have? we are quite lost as to how to go about this.i'm fliying tomorrow to chicago to start my search.
thank you

You could look into Wheaton, its an EXCELLENT town. Not a huge Jewish population, but there are Jews there. Ive even seen a few Haredim in the area. If you want the biggest Jewish populations stick to the Northern suburbs, but theyre a bit far from Downers Grove. Skokie has a very sizeable Jewish population.

Have you looked at a map? Working in downers grove & living in north shore suburbs is not a good idea. Try Naperville, Hinsdale, Western Springs, La Grange, Oak Brook, etc.

It's a tough call, but I'd say any town within these school districts would fit your bill:

Stevenson HS (in Lincolnshire, includes Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, etc.), New Trier HS (in Winnetka, includes Glencoe, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Northfield, etc.), Glenbrook North (Northbrook), Deerfield HS (Deerfield, Bannockburn), Highland Park HS (Highland Park, Highwood), maybe even Glenbrook South (Glenview).

New Trier & Stevenson consistently rank very highly among those districts, but they're also the biggest districts. The New Trier suburbs will be even more $$$, and closer to Chicago. All of these areas are affluent and have arguably the largest Jewish populations in suburban Chicago. Good luck!

On a weekly basis, he spends less time flying back & forth once per week than he would driving from the north suburbs to downers grove every day. I spent 18 months commuting to houston & my weekly commute time went up dramatically when I was assigned to a client in the suburbs.

Here is the list of the alleged top high schools in Illinois for 2008: http://www.suntimes.com/images/cds/pdf/top50high-2008.pdf (broken link).

Hinsdale is comparable to New Trier & would be about 90 minute to 2 hours per day less of a commute for your husband.

Hinsdale is your best choice, religion, town and school.

They're less Jewish families in the Southern/Western suburbs but there are some. Google Temples in the areas you're interested and call them to ask specifics. They'll know more.

The North Shore is nice because the schools are closed for the major Jewish holidays. (The Christian kids love this too. LOL) But a 2 hour commute sounds awful.
