Is there a suburb with the look & feel of the NS but without the price?
We are relocating to Chicago this summer from KC, Kan. and are having a hard time focusing our search for a home. My husband will be working in Grayslake so the commute is important, but a comfortable home and ideal neighborhood are more important. We love the look and feel of the NS neighborhoods. We want historic and charming with a great downtown and lots to do within walking distance. We just can't afford the price of the NS. Where can we find something remotely similar? We're so tired of cookie-cutter, Johnson County beige.
I will not work outside the home after the move so I want a community where I can get involved. We also have an infant, so schools are not important at the moment. Although I have found that quality neighborhoods go hand in hand with quality schools. Price range is $250K-$400K, depending on taxes as I don't want the total monthly payment more than $2,500.
Thanks in advance!

Not Mundelein that's for sure, not a great downtown area there at all. Libertyville is nice but not sure how the older homes are pricing (they would be near downtown). Grayslake just doesn't do it for you? I can't really think of anything else, Antioch maybe? I've always liked Antioch.
I was born in Evanston, then we moved to Mundelein. I don't want to run Mundelein down but do not think it fits the bill for you.

The answer, of course, is no. One can live in any of the decent suburbs west or northwest of Chicago, but they are not the North Shore.
If you are looking for similar environments: note that some of the areas north of Milwaukee are nice, but those (of course) aren't in the Chicagoland metro.

Vernon Hills has good schools, good housing, and lots of stuff to do. It is also not far from Grayslake. Libertyville also fits the bill, but Vernon Hills is nicer and newer in my opinion. You could also try Wadsworth, though its a little rural still. Wadsworth is north of Grayslake.

sorry, 250-400 puts you in the tired cookie-cutter category. You seem to be thinking in terms of KC dollars. 2,500 per month including taxes and insurance gets you very little.

Cook County BG, Lake County won't be within the budget for BG.
