That being said, I have been to Lansing a number of times as my handyman owns a home there and we have actually gone to a few of the local bars and a couple of the liquor stores. Great prices.
Lansing is certainly not the worst. Actually, to be fair, it may not even be in the top 10 worst suburbs. It is certainly not one of the nicer suburbs and is getting worse but it is still better than say Calumet City or Maywood. Perhaps there are suburbs that are worse than Lansing that did not make my bottom 10, but Lansing is certainly not a place I would ever raise a family and is certainly trending in the wrong direction.

Same here. I may disagree with you, Humboldt, but I certainly respect you and your opinions.
My opinion has not changed either: I would gladly have raised my family in Lansing if circumstances hadn't changed for us. I really miss living there.

Maybe because its not in the top five? Even for just the North Shore.

Remember the most prestigious suburbs aren't always the most expensive and popular.

I'm certainly not calling Hyde Park a ghetto or rough hood. I been there many times and is one of the neighborhoods I would like to move in if I was in the city. I'm saying that it seem like there is a double standards for crime between the city and burbs. What is consider safe or average in the city , might be consider sketchy in the suburbs and vice versa.
Speaking of crime, is there a way to find the crime stats for each Chicago neighborhood or community?

That is probably true to some extent. People are willing to put up with more negatives in general in the city in exchange for urban services/amenities. Suburbs suck by and large in that regard so one tends to have a very low threshold of tolerance for any grit, crime, or general ghettonness.

Northbrook just isn't prestigious. Whatever your criteria it just isn't there. Its a perfectly nice place though.
Maybe you define prestigious differently in Milwaukee.

No, prestigious is the same anywhere, I was told by several people that Northbrook is very upscale and prestigious and these are lifelong Chicagoan's but I'm finding out that even from life long residents of Chicagoland there still can be a wide opinion on any issue.

Libertyville should at least crack the top ten on the good lists.

Well this this list was for the "top five", and I would be very surprised to see Northbrook even in a "top ten" list. Its still a nice place, but there are many many nicer places. Are your friends from Northbrook? Maybe thats the answer.
