Lots of good suggestions above. I will add that there is quite a cross section of people in Lake Co and even across the border in WI. Some towns do have areas where there is racial tension, while this tension typically come from small minded people, the reality is that such people do exist, and some of them do tend to cluster with similar folks. Generally the the trucks and full size sedans in their drive (and yard) with the bumper stickers supporting non-mainstream ideas are a give-away, but to say this is not an issue is naive.
On the side of the aisle, if schools are important to you there is sadly a great disparity in achievement in schools that have a high percentage of low income students. These schools also tend to have a high percentage of minority students. While Lake Co is not segregated by race the way some towns are, there is massive segregation by income.
With this in mind, and given that you do have desire to rent, it would be my strong suggestion that you seek out an affordable rental property in as 'upscale' a town as you can afford. The schools in Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Lincolnshire, Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest and surrounding areas that feed into these high schools are significantly better than others. Best High Schools Search - US News and World Report Barrington is probably too far west. Given the size and spread of housing in the areas, some have very few rentals. You will have to hunt a bit. The best bet might be the older sections of some towns like Libertyville.
Good Luck!

Its also pretty absurd for you to ask him if he's new to the forum. Might I direct you to review your reputation points vs his?

Anthera, please re-read the the initial thread. If you aren't racist then the comment wasn't for you or the gentleman who made that comment. If you have nothing to post that relates to my question then excuse yourself from this thread. Again, if it doesn't relate to you then why comment. people are so quick to speak/comment without thoroughly reading and taking the time out to understand what is meant to be said. really sad!
Have a great day!

Good points Chet...
Msnicole83, I'm not sure how you meant your comment about racism but I do understand your concern... I grew up in this area (Waukegan) and also have family/friends in interracial marriages who live in no. Lake co. They were careful to avoid living in towns where they sensed racial tensions. I cannot comment on which towns have racial tension and I know there are ignorant jerks everywhere. However, they did avoid living in some of the towns near the IL/WI border (e.g. Winthrop Harbor, Racine). These couples now live in Gurnee, Grayslake, and Antioch and relate how welcoming these communities have been to them. The other towns suggested by Chet may also be a good fit. However, they will be a bit pricier.

IMHO, Libertyville is a great town with excellent schools, but rents are a little high. While Mundelein has its problems, it is small enough to be controlled, and prices have stayed better. Vernon Hills is also another alternative price wise. Grayslake has high property taxes, but I don't know about their rents.

This is an open forum. Anyone can post a response. I'm not black, but if someone made a racist comment in my presence I would still be offended. I find your presumption of racism in this forum impolite to say the least.
People here don't tend to make racist comments. If anyone did the mods would take it down and the poster would be banned. For you to assume that people would be making racist statements is pretty rude.

Rude??!? Lady get off that high horse. (here's my hand to help you down) lol seriously, Please re-read. I don't get off on being rude, truely not my thing. You can't honestly say that people don't make racist comments. I can read any post from beauty to real estate and racism always makes it's way in. (can send you the links for many if you'd like). and it's toward all groups of people. Additionally I wasn't assuming anything, I actually took the time out to read some of the posts which is what compelled me to make that comment. Seeing as though you two are the only ones who have a problem with this post this.... for you...here it goes, officially: I DID NOT MEAN TO INSULT ANYONE. MY COMMENT, IN SO MANY WORDS, WAS MEANT TO SAY BE NICE BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR ANY NEGATIVITY. I'm not sure how we got here but that is what i meant. NO matter how you took it that's what i meant. SMH..my apologies if you were offended. Maybe i didn't say it right, maybe you didn't read it right but my intentions were good.
are we done? can i get back to what the post was originally for?
it's so funny how people interpret things, i'm taking a communication class and everything i've studied thus far is true.
kisses, be blessed

I would be very interested to see any links from "this" forum that are racist.
