Here's the website for Lockport, Illinois. [url=http://www.lockport.org/]
Here's the one for Chicago: [url=http://www.choosechicago.com/Pages/default.aspx]

While there might be some culture shock for you, Lockport has a large Polish and Lithuanian population. Also, Chicago, which is close to Lockport, has a large mixture of people, so you should be able to fit in. There are many opportunities for you to learn, explore, and have fun here.

I lived in Lockport for 4 years and just recently moved a couple miles south to its neighboring town New Lenox.

Lockport is a fairly small place and there isn't that much to do within its small borders; however, you will find plenty of things do throughout entire Chicagoland area especially downtown Chicago. What sort of activities are you interested in? I can give you a better idea where to go if you are more specific. Obviously Chicago has the most to offer - museums, the lakefront, sporting venues, dining, theatre, etc. There is a commuter train station in Lockport that will take you to Chicago, but it does not run on weekends and has a very limited weekday schedule. There are other train lines that do run on a more frequent basis if you were interested in using that mode of transportation. The website is www.metrarail.com. I would suggest using either the Rock Island or the Southwest Service lines.

Lockport does have a small library. New Lenox and Orland Park both have really nice newer libraries that I would suggest if you are able to get there. Lockport's downtown area is right along the I&M canal, and there is a nice walking/bikepath there. There are several bars/restaurants in downtown Lockport as well as a bowling alley. The closest movie theatre is in New Lenox and there are also a bunch more restaurants there. There really isn't any shopping available in Lockport (aside from food/pharmacy type stores). The two closest malls are in Joliet and Orland Park.

There are two main food stores in town, Jewel-Osco and Walmart. Walmart would be the one with the lower prices and there is also a much more variety of things you can purchase there. www.walmart.com for the national website. You can click on the "Local Ad" at the top of the page, and type in Lockport's zip code of 60441 to get an idea of prices. They are in the process of building a Target (a more upscale version of a Walmart), but I have no clue when that project is going to be finished.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Lockport is actually surrounded by open land more than most places in Chicagoland, but at the end of the day it's one of about 230 or so suburbs that are mashed together around Chicago.

There's 10,000,000 people in the area all around Lockport (Chicago). It just depends on what you want as far as shopping. If you have a car and want a TV, then drive to some suburb and there are hundreds of options. If you want something specific, maybe go into Chicago on the train and do some shopping.

When you look at Lockport and the population and things going on there, you really have to take into concideration that you're surrounded by 10 million people.
