Maybe he's right. Maybe Berwyn is actually going to the dumps. Any residents can attest to this?
Negative. My parents still live there (I grew up there) and I'd say that in the past 5 years or so it's actually gotten better, at least on the south side. A lot of young, middle-class parents moving out from the city who are looking for something that still has an urban feel and is affordable.

Your friend shouldn't be allowed to leave his house if he really thinks that. How does he possibly function in society with that level of psychotic paranoia? Now, take a ride down Pulaski through Lawndale, that would be a legitimate statement.

UPDATE! I found an aprtment in Lyons and it is fine. Wow, people are really freaked out about nothing. I work nights and I have never felt unsafe. In fact parts of south Berwyn and most of Riverside are gorgeous.

I have lived in Berwyn for the past 8 months. I have seen no evidence of crime at all. Where are you people from, Beaver Cleaver land?

^^Most of the posters said crime wasn't an issue in Berwyn, so I don't know where the blanket "you people" statement comes from.

People assume Berwyn is bad because there are a lot of immigrants and *gasp* Hispanics living there. It's not exactly a high-rolling yuppie paradise, but it's still pretty safe compared to many other inner-ring suburbs.

My dad always used to say people assumed Berwyn is bad because of the God awful sculptures at Cermak Plaza.
