I hate Chicagoland. I say Chicago area if I'm talking to people from out of the area, i.e., "Where are you from?" "Chicago area".

I wonder where the term Chicagoland orignated?
I've heard Chicagoland in movies dating back to the 1960's

All the time. It is used by a lot of advertising agencies to describe the six surrounding counties AND northern Indiana.

Ditto on the ad agencies. I hear it more in commercials than anywhere else. Someone from out of town once told me it sounded like an amusement park. Ever since then, I can't hear it without grinning or grimacing.

When I am talking about the 6 county area I say Chicago area, when I am also speaking of Grundy, Kendall and Kankakee Counties plus Kenosha and NW Indiana I tend to say Chicagoland.

I write it, but can't think of the last time I said it out loud.
