Default Bartlett Train noise

We were looking at a house around County Farm and Army Trail, and heard a train horn off in the background. How is the train noise near the tracks - say 3-5 blocks? Is it mostly commuters or freight? Do they sound their horn a lot? How about at night?

The houses look nice but I'd hate to live somewhere noisy.

County Farm and Army Trail? That's the CN (formerly Illinois Central) Freeport line, and it only sees a few trains a day. And even that number might diminish somewhat if the CN/EJ&E merger gets all its possible re-routings accomplished.

By the way, I thought that line wasn't using horns at the crossings? Maybe its just in certain communities. Further east, there are "Warning, No Train Horns" at many street crossings. Its possible the horns you heard were in response to people or vehicles on the track.

It was definitely a train horn - and now that I think about it, it was closer to Schick or Sterns road.
