You might also consider:

1) 294 south
2) 55 south
3) IL-47 south at Dwight
4) I-74 east at Mahomet

I have gone this way many times, it's nice....

Why?! It's slower.

The OP specifically stated that they wanted to avoid I-57, thus my idea. If you're asking why I did it back in the day, well, I guess just for variety's sake...

Not picking a fight here, but this is what question was:
Quote:
Need to go to Champaign Urbana next week, and do not want to go the usual way on 294 to 80 to 57 ( WAY too much construction!)
Also do not want to go on 94.
Can I go down Cicero and pick up 57 WAY below the city????

Okay, so they don't want to avoid 57 entirely, just the northern portion of it ... fine, fair enough. They can always cut over to 57 at, say, Forrest (US-24), although there's not too much point in doing that.

What about 355 -> 80 -> US-45/52...

The OP can take Willow/Palatine Rd. to IL-53 which becomes I-290 which leads to I-355 south. There is a bottleneck at I-355 just south of I-88 due to road construction and a bottleneck at I-80/I-355 because of I-80 not having enough lanes to accomodate the traffic volume during rush hour. These are minor bottlenecks. If it were past 2PM and I was going south, this is the route I would take. But then again, I am halfway between I-294 and IL-53. Also adds a moderate amount of extra time to drive. It truly depends on what time of day you are traveling as far as determining the quickest route!
