So starting next week I am going to try to feed my family on a 100/week food budget includes tolietries. I am looking for a local butcher shop where I can possible buy a side of beef for the freezer. I am willing to travel a bit. We are not from this area and have no idea where to look. I am in Bartlett. Thanks in advance for any referals!!

I have not dealt with places in a long time, but they used to be a decent way to purchase "freezer beef".

Personally, you'd do better shopping around and hitting 1) the chain groceries on their loss leaders, 2) the local independents on their loss leaders and 3) the small ethnic markets, especially Mexican.

The places offering "sides of beef" in this area end up being very expensive, especially when you see how much of the carcass is bones and less desirable cuts of beef.

Personally, we get a lot of canned beef from the in-laws when they slaughter a cow. And I have half my freezer filled with free beef from friends who do NOT know how to cook a lot of the less tender cuts (shanks, bottom rounds, etc.).

there used to be a place in hampshire to buy a side of beef. Also, periodically, we have friends in the western kane county area that offer sides of beef, but it is on an irregular basis. try giving it a google.
