Default Highland Park - Gay Friendly??

I am a 32-year-old lesbian who currently lives in Andersonville. My partner and I love the city, especially this neighborhood, but we are contemplating moving to the suburbs to start a family (congestion, crime, and poor quality of CPS school system make it tough to raise kids here). I've been told Oak Park is the go-to choice, and I've been there several times an enjoyed it, but it's a bit too crowded and busy for kids. We are looking more for an area with quiet, dead-end or cul-de-sac streets, parks galore and lots of other kids to grow up with.

I spent my childhood in Highland Park, and have many wonderful memories of the area. I know it is a bit expensive, but the schools and parks are great, and the neighborhood I remember from childhood was warm, accepting and tight-knit. Since I was only 12 when I left, I don't know much of the politcal makeup of the community, but have been told it's very liberal and accepting.

Is this true? Could my partner and I theoretically raise a family in Highland Park without our children being teased at school (beyond what is to be expected from all grade-school children) or us being shunned by our neighbors? I know, as the saying goes, you can never go home again, but I would love to raise our children in a neighborhood like the one I grew up in.

Default Highland Park or Oak Park?

Hi There -

I just read your post about looking for a gay-friendly suburb. It looks like you've spent a little time in Oak Park and have decided against it. Just a note to say that this really is a fabulous place. It's extremely gay friendly. I have a 3 year old and a 16 year old- both have had nothing but positive experiences. My 16 year old is very out (she's not gay - but she's very open about my partner and I) and we've never had a problem. No doubt the houses are close together and most are about 100 years old. We're on a great street though - it's quiet - full of kids - we all spend our summer evenings out on our front porches...I couldn't have asked for any place more perfect.

Whatever you decide - My partner and I wish you the absolute best of luck!

I know a male couple who live in Highland Park and are very happy there. They don't have kids so I can't address that part of your question. All the Highland Parkers I've met were very sophisticated open-minded people about social issues. I think you and your partner will be very happy there. Good luck.
