We're visiting the Western Suburbs next week with young kids and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for nice playgounds. We'll be staying in a hotel near Yorktown Shopping Center, but will have a car and can drive 15-20 minutes away if there's a nice playground. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know if anything is really worth driving for, and I suppose that depends a lot on the ages of the children and what else you have to spend time doing.

Yorktown Mall itself has an indoor play area which seems to attract kids under about 8.

There are outdoor play areas all around that you could drive to. The various towns are all served by Park Districts that mostly do a nice job of maintaining the parks. The trick is what is closest and most likely to hold your kids interest. Oakbrook Terrace has a medium sized park that is hidden to most people but easy to find. It is right at the corner of Rt 83 and 22nd St, behind the office buildings that house a Ditka's Steakhouse. They have the normal swings and slides as well as a small but well kept nature center on the banks of a medium sized pond.

A bit further away, in Downers Grove, there are several nice parks with playgrounds. One of the easier ones to get to from the Yorktown area is just off of Fairview Ave north of Ogden. Fairview is the extension of Meyes Rd that passes near the east end of the large shopping /dining area to the east of Yorktown. The play area is actually east, near Cumnor, but there is parking off of Fairview.

A bit further east Westmont has large park with an outdoor splashpad. There is a daily fee. The park also has several different (no fee) play areas for toddlers through middle school. Westmont Park District - Ty Warner Park

The closest park is probably run by the York Center Park District, it is sort of tucked away near the intersection of Luther Ave and 16th St.: york center park district - Google Maps

Suggest you visit Panfish playground in Glen Ellyn. Very safe and not too far away. Here is a link to a map. Glen Ellyn Park District - Parks & Facilities

Lombard has The Commons, a huge park with a new pool and water slide. It's just east of the Lombard train station.
