Where would you go? (Chicago, Evanston: crime rate, home, bankruptcy)

Homewood, Joliet, or Oak Lawn

Out of these,Joliet interest me the most. There are two casinos, race car track, baseball stadium, parades, a mall, and some other stuff. What more can I ask for in a big suburb/exurb? I checked the official site and they give people a reason to move there. Its big enough where just because there is one bad side of town doesn't make the whole city look like crap. 147,000 in nearly 40 sq. miles is enough for me to move around.

Homewood is nice and safe. Flossmoor is the more attractive one, but I will need more than $300k.

The only reason I would live in Oak Lawn because it put me way closer to work and the city(where I really want to live). By going this route, I can avoid the $.80 toll road fee I pay 10 times a week and save so much money on gas.

Hmm. I would agree that Homewood and Flossmoor are the more attractive out of the two.

Oak Lawn is a bit too umm...well let's just say it's not for me. Joliet is a bit far out....I agree it has a lot going for it. Plus it has neighbors from New Lenox spending money in town.

As a resident of the south suburbs, a very happy resident at that, I have read forums, asked friends, even my family why the south burbs are unappealing, but I can't seem to get any other answer besides white flight.

Someone, anyone out there have a real reason why they would or would not move here?

I agree with those who have said the south suburban area has decline over the recent past. It seems noticeable to those of us who live in NWI and used to go there for some shopping, dining, movies, etc.

I'd also agree with those who recommend Orland or Tinley. Remember, though, that this area has become VERY crowded. Traffic can be really bad. It seems as though the nearby communities in Will county have grown a bit too much as well.

Perceptioon is everything. To me a suburb, once I am off the main routes, it represents less noise, less traffic, a slower pace, green grass, mature trees, good sidewalks, small parks and more space between homes. It makes little difference whether of not the downtown is saturated with bars, restaurants or stores, but it should have some basic services. hardware, library, barber and beauty shop, auto parts, post office, cafe, pharmacy, insurance agency, and a variety store. Not too rar away I would want to find a pluimber, car repair, mower repair, electrician, maybe a neighborhood bar/with food, medical clinic, Dairy Queen, and a community pool. A little farther a away there should be a softball diamon and some places to worship scattered about and schools. Anything and Everything else would be a bonus for me. .

I have been thinking this over and over and over, and I just don't think it's that bad here. I mean, look at Olympia Fields!

I'm from the Northwest side, I like it here. I plan on staying in the general area as long as I'm around here.
