While I am sure that there are some people that live in the towns mentioned do drive the cars mentioned I don't know that would be a reason to choose to live there.
Further, neither town has any restrictions on people only living in big mansions in those areas, plenty of people the towns' residents live only in itty bitty mansions...

They will be able to buy a nice home in either Bannockburn or Barrington Hills for less than $5 million. They are both the wealthiest of the wealthy suburbs. This shouldn't be a problem. I have seen many Cadillacs and other vehicles driving thru both villages.

Near the southern Lake county-NW Cook county border, there are wealthy neighborhoods: Barrington, Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Long Grove, Kildeer, amongst many more.
I have a friend who lives in Spring Grove. From her description of the area and the rules of the neighborhood ("no garage may face the street, it will ruin the house's appearance"), that seems like a very wealthy, elitist neighborhood. It's in exurbia, close to the Wisconsin border.
The North Shore of Chicago, as mentioned above, also has expensive neighborhoods.
Highland Park, for example, is where Michael Jordan lives?
Hinsdale has some very beautiful houses too.
That town is in Dupage county.
Near it is Lemont and Burr Ridge, both have expensive houses.
On the eastern border of Kane county are Geneva and Batavia, both are very wealthy neighborhoods.

If you use the ranking available from the non-forum side of city-data you will have a much more accurate picture of housing values / household income. http://www.city-data.com/city/Illinois.html
Based on the data it would be hard to call many of the above mentions towns 'very wealthy'.

Last time I checked, they were all in the top 1% for median income and household value in the United States.

Maybe they should visit these towns before they buy a house. That will give then an idea of what they are really like.
Do they actually live in the city of Detroit? If so BH and Bannockburn might be far to rural for them.

From what I saw, only Kenilworth, Glencoe, and Winnetka registered with well over a million. Hinsdale came close to that mark.
Would you honestly say, though, that these towns are not very wealthy? I suppose it comes to personal perception of wealth?
