My husband just got a job in Chicago and I know little about the area. What burbs should I look into if we can only spend $250-$300K on a house or condo? We have a small child and so want to find a decent school district as well. Thanks for any advice!

Even with price declines there are not a whole lot of really desirable towns with a large inventory in the price range you desire. Depending on where in Chicago the job is it may make sense to be near a commuter rail line that is part of the Metra system.

You may be able to find some good values in towns like Villa Park or Westmont in DuPage Co, or Desplaines, Palatine and Wheeling in Cook Co.

The homes in your price range in those towns might be older but should be in good condition and have some desirable features.

Brookfield and LaGrange Park have many homes in that price range, Metra access, safety, and good schools. There are many others as well, but the homes won't be spectacular in that price range in any desirable suburb.

You can get an amazing house in good shape where you won't have to be ripping out green bath tubs and pink toilets in towns such as Tinley Park, Orland Park, Mokena, Frankfort, Lockport, Homer Glen, Lemont, and Crestwood. In all cases, all towns have great schools, taxes are.... well about as good to be expected, shopping is abundant, crime is low to non-existant, recreation is ample, trains do service the towns and do run right into the Loop, traffic in Orland Park primarily can be a bit cumbersome, but the locals know how to navigate around it. Eatting establishments are plentiful especially in Orland Park and Tinley Park.

Here is a brief listing of some Orland Park homes you can expect to see in your price range. Real Estate at Homes.Com for ORLAND PARK, IL

Good luck.

We recently moved here and had a somewhat similar budget to yours. People speak well of the schools where we live, Carol Stream. A website we found helpful when looking was Find All the Homes for Sale & Experienced Real Estate Agents | Redfin. Best of luck to you!

Maybe you and I have different ideas of what is "desirable", but there is a TON of inventory in that price range in the towns along the Union Pacific Northwest line: Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Palatine. Many of the schools within that area are very good. A good realtor should easily find you a house in that price range in a good school district in those areas.
