We are considering making a move to Chicago suburbs. I was raised in Chicago and have family there and in Addison. At this point, we want to rent in a good area. We are looking for a single family residence but it seems that there are more townhouses for rent than SFRs. We currently live in a house and are used to this type of environment. We have two kids 12 and 15 and a small dog that will be coming with us. Husband is collecting SS and I'm in real estate although considering changing careers. Our credit is not good and we will probably need to offer additional security to get into a place.

Can you provide some benefits of living in a townhouse vs living in a single family home? Is the rental market hot? Will we have a hard time finding a place?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Chicago simply has far more townhouses that need to be rented out then people who are looking to put tenants in a single family detached home.

The biggest plus for a townhouse is the general lack of exterior work, but that also points to its biggest downside -- general lack of space out of doors for kids / pets...

The rental trend in Chicago is not particularly hot, but rental houses in Chicago tend to be far less common than townhouses. If you want a house you may do better to expand your search to include suburbs.
