Is Blue Island safe to go to school at night?
Hi there. =)
I am going to be graduating from high school early this year and I am looking at going to a beauty school to study cosmetology.
Right now I am living in a suburb in Chicago and the closest school that I can find is in Blue Island. The address is 1284O S. Western.
I really don't mean to sound rude to anyone, and I have only drove through Blue Island a couple times, but it kinda seems like a bit of a sketchy neighborhood.
The classes would be at night, and I would more than likely be walking to and from the school because it really isn't that far from my house.
I've just never had a reason to go that way, lol.
I just want to make sure that it is a good area and that I will be safe walking to and from school.
I don't mean to sound over cautious, it's just I am only 17 years old and I am looking out for my own safety because I don't know much about that neighborhood.
Anything will be much appreciated. =D
Thanks.

Blue Island is a suburb. The mods will move this thread for you and you'll be more likely to get more helpful information there.

Well, I think you need to tell us where you're living if you're wondering if the walk there will be safe. The funny thing is, a mile or two in just about every direction from that address will take you to an area that is as rough or rougher than Blue Island. Except maybe towards Merrionette Park?
I think that location is safe, because it's right on Western Ave. There are fancy, well-kept homes nearby, the main police station is five blocks away, two Metra lines right there, major hospital right there. There is just too much hustle and bustle at 12840 S. Western for much crime during normal daylight and evening hours. Besides the fact that central Blue Island around there is still nice. What hours are these night classes? I'll defer to someone with more current local knowledge about the area in off-hours. But the bigger issue is almost surely the path you're walking than 12840 S. Western.

I live in Evergreen Park, it's kinda small. It's near Oak Lawn and Hometown.
I didn't mean anything nasty towards Blue Island, it's just i'm kinda nervous about walking alone at any area late at night. I would be getting there at 5 or 6 and coming home around 8:3O - 9:OO pm.
Thanks so much for the help so far!!

Generally it would be okay. But, you are walking back and forth from EP? Even just coming from 99th and Western that's a bit of a walk. As it is, a I think the area around 119th and Western is a bit dodgy. Up towards 127th seems much better. And at 127th, I wouldn't go much further east than Vincennes.

I live in Blue Island.
You would be walking from Evergreen Park? That's a long walk at night.
Or would you be walking to and from the Western bus?
That school is right in the uptown of Blue Island, there is a Moraine Valley satellite school within a block of where you will be. They have night classes too, so that adds to the people coming and going.
Check out the school and see what you think.
You are right to be cautious as young woman. How safe you will be really depends on exactly how you are getting home.

I know, it's a bit of a hike. I didn't even realize that they had a bus right there. Wow, feelin dumb now lol. I think i'm gonna look into taking the Western bus then. I feel a little better knowing that I don't have to walk as far now and there are going to be more people. Thanks so much for the answers.

If my daughter were 17 I would not allow this. You should not be walking at night at all by yourself.
